Default Day 283. Matthew 1-3 - 09-26-2011, 05:02 PM

Matthew 1-3

Matthew 1

It's new testament time!

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

The Gospel of Matthew was probably not written by Matthew. Most people believe it to be very similar, if not a retelling, of Mark. It is normally called Matthew, as he's mentioned several times in the narrative. The belief is that it was written around 80-90 AD by an educated Jew, familiar with the Jewish law.

"Scholars" believe that there were two additional resources (with Mark) used in the writing, "Q", a collection of sayings, and "M" material unique to Matthew. Some believe there were two version of Matthew written, one in Greek (the one that survived) and one written in Hebrew.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

Matthew begins with begats. It's important to trace Jesus lineage back as far as they can. Jesus is like a prized racehorse, or Kobe beef. You have to know who the grandfather is, otherwise, you can't be sure if it's the correct breeding stock.

So, in Matthew, Jesus lineage is traced to Abraham. Here's the Matthew genesis of Jesus.

Abraham> Isaac> Jacob> Judas> Phares> Esrom> Aram> Aminadab> Naasson> Salmon> Booz> Obed> Jesse> David

David> Solomon> Roboam> Abia> Asa> Josaphat> Joram> Ozias> Joatham> Achaz> Ezekias> Manasses> Amon> Josias>

Jechonias> Salathiel> Zorobabel> Abiud> Eliakim> Azor> Sadoc> Achim> Eliud> Eleazar> Matthan> Jacob> Joseph> Jesus.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

You'll note that there are only 41 people mentioned. If you break it up like above (as listed in verse 17) Abraham to David is 14. David to Josias (carrying away) is 14, Jechonias to Jesus is 14. That's 41, although it seems like there should be 42.

Jesus HAS to be in the line of David, so that he has an actual claim to the throne of Israel/Judah.

Some interesting tidbits from the list. In verse 5, Ruth is mentioned. Ruth was a Moabite, Rachab (Boaz's mother) is also a Gentile. In verse 6, Solomon's mother isn't mentioned by name (Bathsheba) she is called "her that had been the wife of Urias".

Matthew omits three generations after Joram: Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah. Abiud through Matthan are not in the Old Testament, they were taken from a public registry.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

This is the first reference in the bible (KJV1611) to the Holy Ghost. You would think a third of the trinity would get better publicity than that in his work, since He (the Holy Ghost) was the part that did the inspiration to the scribes who translated the Bible, but He's (It's) not a glory hound, but just don't cross Him (It).

Joseph found Mary pregnant. It wasn't his baby. So, then why is Joseph listed in the genealogy of Jesus, in verse 16, when his sperm had nothing to do with the baby Jesus? Shouldn't we need to know how Mary is in the line of David?

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

Joseph was a good guy, he was just going to send her away to live with some distant relatives (like people still do when their teenage daughter somehow gets pregnant), but...

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

An angel said to not send her off to a nunnery.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

So Joseph was told what to name his offspring by an angel.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

This is in reference to (Isaiah 7:14). Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Catholics claim that Mary never had sex. Perpetual virginity of Mary. Did you know that the Immaculate Conception, (according to the Catholics) is not Jesus conception, it's Mary's. They believe that Mary wasn't born with original sin. They claim she HAD to be born sin free, so that the Son of God (Jesus) could be born without having to deal with sin. Their concept makes Mary just as divine as Jesus. Those wacky cathylicks.

Matthew 2

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Herod the Great was born around 74 BC, he died in 4 BC. He rebuilt the temple in a year and a half, in 20 BC. He did some great things.

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

When the guys were in the east, they saw the star, they didn't see the star "in the east" meaning looking to the east, otherwise, they wouldn't have gone to Jerusalem, they would have gone east... to China, and we know Jesus ain't no chink!

3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

So, Herod asks where the messiah is going to be born.

6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

This is the second prophecy that Matthew has talked about. This time he isn't talking about Isaiah, it's Micah. Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

Herod sends the wise men, to find the king. Why didn't he go with, or send someone with, who knows... other than that would ruin the story.

9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Bethlehem is south of Jerusalem. So first, the wise men would have been traveling west, following a star (in the west; from the east), and now the star would have changed position in the sky, and led them south.

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

Gold is obviously, gold. Frankincense is the resin from the Boswellia tree. Burning frankincense helped carry people's prayers to heaven, they thought. Myrrh is Arabic for bitter. It's the resin of a tree in north Africa. It's antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. It's also used in embalming. Gold, for the king, Frankincense for the priest, and myrrh because he's our healer, and our sacrifice.

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

They went straight west, not the 8 kilometers back to Jerusalem, then west.

13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

So, Joseph takes everyone to Egypt.

Contrary to popular portrayals, when the wise men arrived, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus weren't still in the manger. As you saw in verse 11, the wise men found them in a house, not the barn.

15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

This prophet is Hosea, Hosea 11:1. Most people don't think Hosea was prophecying at the time, just recalling the events of the exodus, but Matthew considered it to be prophecy, so he threw that in there.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Jeremiah 31:15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.

So, the massacre of the innocents. All my life I was led to believe that there were thousands of children killed. Most "scholars" don't believe that it took place. Some reference to it claim there were 14,000 children killed, another has it at 64,000 people killed, while another has it at 144,000 people killed. Oddly, the Catholic Encyclopedia claims that there may have been between six and twenty children killed, with the possibility of about a dozen more in the surrounding areas. What kind of a birthing spree would a town have to have to have 144,000 children between 0 and 2, in a year? How large would that town have to be?

Remember, it's "Oh little town of Bethlehem". Not, "OMG, Bethlehem is friggin HUGE!!!"

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

Herod dies, angel says go back, Joseph hears that Herod's son is ruler, so he doesn't go back to where he wanted, he went to...

23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Nazareth.

There is no known actual prophecy in the old testament that says he'll be a Nazarene. Judges 13:5 says Samson "shall be a Nazarite". Jesus wasn't a Nazarite, Nazarite's had no connection to the town of Nazareth. Another theory is that it's based on Isaiah 53:2, "he grew up before him like a tender shoot", the Hebrew word for shoot is nasir... hence nazarene. If you remember back to Zechariah, Zechariah 3:8, "I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH"... am I the first one to notice this? Nasir means shoot, and Jesus is the BRANCH... how hard is that to figure out. Matthew was talking about Zechariah here.

Matthew 3

1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus (although we haven't been told that yet).

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

This is from Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

John took his show all around Judaea. Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came to visit.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

John didn't like them.

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Remember, Jesus isn't just coming to save those who deserve saving, he's also going to do some terrorizing to those who deserve that.

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Are you wheat, and going to be baptized with the Holy Ghost; or are you chaff, and getting the unquenchable fire?

Jesus then shows up to be baptized.

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Although we don't really know what all Jesus has done to this point. We know that he has a proud and gloating father (who happens to be the LORD of all creation). It's not just that Jesus was a good son (to his father) his pops thought that he was really good anyway.

I wonder, was the voice only heard in Jordan, or was it heard throughout the entire world and all of creation at that point?

So what have we learned today?

1. David is used twice in the family tree of Jesus. Three kings are left out. A person who isn't his biological father, and has supplied no DNA, is listed in the tree.

2. The slaughter of the innocents wasn't that bad, if it even happened.

3. Jesus was baptized. He will give you a choice of baptism, Holy Ghost, or Unquenchable Fire, it's your choice.

The other thing about Jesus geniality is its way to short. Forty one generations with twenty years a generation only gets back to 800 BC, not even to 1200 BC, the time of David, let alone Abraham. The explanation was God was taking these men's sperm in a NOT gay way and skipping generations to impregnate women in the future. That explains the missing 700 years between David and Jesus.
