Default Day 9. Genesis 25-27 - 09-13-2007, 04:37 PM

Genesis 25-27

Today we get the stories of:

Abraham's death

the generations of Ishmael

More about Isaac and Rebekah

Jacob and Esau

So, lets begin.

Genesis 25:1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.

This over 100 year old, took another wife. With her, he had 6 children. Impressive.

5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.

6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.

Well, at least he gave them something, which was a little more than the bottle of water and some bread that he gave Hagar and Ishmael.

Abraham died at age 175. 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

A good old age; an old man; full of years... just in case you didn't realize that 175 was old, aged, yeared...

9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;

It was nice of Ishmael to come back to bury his father. Wait, the cave of Machpelah, isn't that the one that Abraham purchased to bury Sarah in, for 400 pieces of silver?

10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

Yep.

Ishmael had many children, and then died at age 137. So he was 38 years younger than his father when he died.

We find out that Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah.

21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

Why does it seem every attractive woman who marries one of the main characters in Genesis is barren at some point?

22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

It was a difficult pregnancy, and it was twins. (But nothing like Romulus and Remus.)

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

It took 20 years from the time Isaac and Rebekah were married for her to conceive.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

Jacob was a momma's boy.

One day, Esau was out hunting, and came in really tired and hungry, and he asked his brother Jacob to make him some lunch. Jacob said he'd only do it if Esau gives him his birthright.

What is a birthright?

According to Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary, a birthright is the special privileges and advantages belonging to the first-born son; a double portion of the paternal inheritance.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

For a bowl of soup, some bread and a drink, Esau gave to Jacob the double portion. He gave up (pretty much) the title of firstborn. He gave up the (basically) the throne, to his younger, momma's boy, brother.

On to Genesis 26.

Genesis 26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

I remember Abimelech, he's the king that Abraham told that Sarah was his sister, not his wife.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

*boggle*

9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

So, Isaac, like his father Abraham, told Abimelech that his hot wife was his sister, because he was afraid that he would be killed for his wife. It must be a family trait. Perhaps in all the years that Isaac was hanging around Abraham's tents, Abe mentioned the story of how he told the king (and pharoah) that his wife was his sister. Which was partly true for Abraham, but for Isaac, he married his cousin, not his half sister.

So Abimelech makes tells his people AGAIN, not to kill a man, because of a woman.

11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

Like Abraham, Isaac did well in Gerar.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

When you have the LORD's favour, you become very great. We'll talk about prosperity christianity later.

16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

Later, Abimelech realizes that he needs a treaty of non-agression with Isaac.

26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

27And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

28And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

29That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.

And everything was fine for a while...

34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

It's always sad when kids marry someone (or someones) that the parent's don't approve of.

Onto Genesis 27.

So far Jacob has taken Esau's double portion for a bowl of soup... what could he do next?

Genesis 27:1 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.

3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;

4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

Isaac is getting old, and wants some tasty venison. His visions not too good, and he wants to give a blessing to his firstborn son, before he dies.

Rebekah overhears this, and she wants her favorite son (the momma's boy) to get the blessing, so she tells Jacob to go get some sheep, and she'll dress them and prepare the meat just the way that Isaac likes.

Jacob says that Isaac will know it's not him because he's not hairy, and Rebekah says, don't worry about it, she has a plan.

15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:

16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:

Ah, smart woman. But this makes you wonder, exactly how hairy was Esau. We know he's hairy, but if you have to put on a suit of goat skin to be that hairy, was Esau like a wolfman?

Jacob takes the meat in to his father, who asks who it is.

19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy first born; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.

Isaac wonders how he found the venison so soon. Jacob said the LORD blessed him in finding it quick. Isaac then thinks something like "you know this doesn't sound like Esau... it sound's like Jacob"

21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.

22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

Isaac is still kind of confused. So he thinks he'll smell his boy.

26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.

27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:

Isaac who can't see, has to rely on his other senses to determine which of his boys it is. His hearing says it's Jacob, but the touch of the hands (goat skin) says Esau, the smell of hunting and hard work smells of Esau, and the savory meat (which wasn't venison) also is of Esau, so Isaac blesses Jacob.

28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

Rain, animals, corn, wine, servants, be a lord, people who curse will be cursed, and those who bless will be blessed.

Wait a second... CORN?

Once again to Eastons.

Quote:
The word is a general term representing all the commodities we usually describe by the words corn, grain, seeds, peas, beans.
Why is that important? Because corn as we know it (indian corn, or maize) was developed in mesoamerica and wasn't known to the rest of the world until European contact with the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Back to the story.

As soon as Jacob leaves with the blessing, Esau comes in with his venison.

32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

Isaac realizes this is the REAL Esau, and he's really sad that he gave the blessing to NOT his favorite son.

34 And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

35 And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.

Esau pleads for a blessing; Isaac finds a little bit left.

39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

Fatness of the earth, dew of heaven (same as Jacob's) oh, but he has to live by the sword (wasn't he doing that already?) and serve his brother. Didn't he already agree to that for a bowl of lentils?

41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

So Esau plans to kill Jacob, as soon as Isaac dies.

Rebekah overhears this too, so she tells Jacob to go live with her brother Laban.

She comes up with a plan of what to tell her husband about why Jacob is leaving.

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

She doesn't like the local girls, and says if her favorite son marries a daughter of Heth, that she's a failure as a mother (wow, she is a Jewish mom). Remember, they were already disappointed in the spouse choices of Esau.

And that ends today's readings.

What have we learned.

1. Abraham had even more kids, that he sent away before he died.

2. Abraham was buried with Rachel.

3. Isaac did the same thing as Abraham, to the same person, when he claimed his wife was his sister.

4. Rebekah, like Rachel was barren, until she gave birth.

5. Jacob was a momma's boy who cooked and cleaned, while Esau was hairy, red, and probably stinky.

6. Jacob took his brothers portion for a bowl of lentils.

7. Jacob took his brothers blessing for a few pieces of meat.

8. Esau married 2 local girls that his mom and dad didn't approve of.

9. Esau has threated to kill Jacob, so mom sent him away to live with her brother...

I wonder what will happen with a guy in Genesis going to live with his uncle...

Brother V, this is almost too deep for some, but very well put.

I am still trying to figure out till this day why God hated Esau! Or have we got to that part yet?

If the Lord leads you to it, he will get you through it.

The hatred of Esau isn't written until Malachi.

Malachi 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Some "bible scholars" claim that "hated" means "loved less" that it means "didn't quite love as much" but when you lay a mountain and heritage to waste, I think that pretty much REALLY means HATED!

Praise Jesus.

From my readings, so far, the bible (KJV1611) doesn't really say why the LORD hates Esau.

Because Esau sold his GODLY birthright for a lousy plate of soup! Take a look at this Biblia Pauperum from Landover's library:

Name: temp.jpg
Views: 149
Size: 39.8 KB

The left and right hand sides show IMPERFECT types of Jesus from the Old Testament. Esau could have been the patriarch of God's chosen people (instead of Jacob), but he thought it more important to fill his stomach. Adam could have stayed in Paradise as God's son, but he gave it up for one bite of the forbidden fruit.

The middle scene shows how Jesus handled a similar situation, when he was tempted by food. Jesus answered, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

That's what Esau failed to realize, and that's why God hates him.

Holbein

1st Corinthians 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
1st Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
1st Corinthians 15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

Doing some meditation upon the subject, it's now obvious to my why Esau was hated.

It all stems from the blessing that Isaac (accidentally) gave to Jacob.

Genesis 27:29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

Basically, the blessing means that whatever you do to Jacob, will also be done to you, by the LORD.

41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

That is why the LORD hated Esau, due to the blessing.

I hope this helps

I'd never realised quite how humiliating this bit is before. Esau is a hairy red real man, who spends all day roundhouse-kicking animals to death so that his family may eat steak, and his momma's boy brother decides to Jew him out of his birthright in exchange for some food, fair enough. But what kind of food does the momma's boy give his manly brother? LENTIL SOUP! Is that the ultimate vegan hippy sissy meal or what?
Quote:

As with most important questions, there's an Answer in Genesis. Go back a bit:

Quote:

Why is this significant? Let's see:
Quote:
Esau's name in Hebrew means "hairy", and, according to Genesis 25:25, it is a reference to his hairiness at birth.
When he was born, he wasn't just hairy, he was so hairy that his parents looked at him and the only name they could think of for him was Hairy. That's one hairy baby.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Quite the opposite.

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

God doesn't respect you for who you are, as you see, in Acts 10:35, he respects you for what you are.

Through an understanding of why God has come to loathe the contemptuous caramel-coloured Canaanites (His Will forbidding Isaac's marriage to one in chapter 24 / Brother V's "Day 8") and Esau and his begotten hairy red Norsemen (mentioned three chapters later in His book of Genesis, once they had revealed their demonically carved sailing vessels and He came to understand their evils and author them), we can begin to glimpse His ultimate plan.

It is intended for callow conniving anglo-saxon Protestants (specifically those of our most favored Church) to be the chosen people. We are to despise, degrade, deny and desire destruction for those that are different from us just as our champion Jacob has done, for that is putting God's Holy Word into practice.

Further, we should have no desire to perpetuate the flawed bits of design by KNOWing them, as these violations of the goodness and wholeness of Creation have sought to do. Once kicked out of the garden, all future lineage was assured by the LORD a full understanding of what shame is. To display none and go against His wishes is to trespass the forbidden fruit in a fairly flaunting fashion.

PRAISE JESUS and the rightful persecution of others!

Only through tenacious tithing may we procure enough poverty to become like Christ. Pass the plate to please and PRAISE Jesus!!!

Thank you for clearing things up for me. I was confused about God hating Esau.

Praise Jesus!
