What is Coronapanic? What does Panic mean? Examples of panic. -
03-12-2020, 01:49 PM
Dear non-hysterical Ladies,
Everyone is saying " don't panic", but nobody is explaining what " panic" even means.
So far the only example of "panic" the average person has witnessed is people buying more toilet paper than they will use. So what? After the pandemic is over, we will celebrate with a bunch of epic Halloween pranks.
But panic also has a dark side. Doing things thoughtlessly, breaking the law, scaring other people stupid with rumors, these are bad enough. But some forms of panic are outright ugly - I won't say where I found these comments, but they'll give you an idea of how bad panic can get: "Confirmed cases" is a terrible statistic, it's like talking about "confirmed iceberg size". The actual numbers turn out to be something like 10 times the confirmed rate. Doubling every 4-5 days. That may not sound scary and it isn't, until it suddenly is. Then you'd wish you did the stitch in time, instead of having to do 9, make that 18, make that 36, 72, 142... That means ALL the damage is doubled by every 4-5 days we spend waiting and seeing and telling each other not to panic. Twice as much damage to small businesses (in the long run). Twice as much racism. Twice as many people going crazy with fear. Twice as many stores pillaged for their toilet paper. From another dark corner of the internet: I think people are "fighting the last war" here, in this case, they are behaving the way we learned to fight the War On Terror - by refusing to be terrorized, by "Keeping Calm and Carrying On", by telling each other that if we change our ways, we are letting the terrorists win.
But that was World War T, and this is World War C.
Shutting down travel with Europe, even though there might be more cases here than there? That's the new Maginot Line, and "Just don't touch your face" is the new "Machine guns can be beaten with More Elan!".Then there's "Coronavirus won't stop us from partying!", the new "Once we win all the battles, the Viet Kong will surrender". Wrong war, dummies. Moments like this are why leadership, and the character of a leader, actually matter.
Imagine what would happen if we had Ronald Reagan, or Roosevelt, or JFK, or Churchill, or anyone other than a science-denying sociopath.
We would get a calm but honest explanation of the facts. A grim statement that in the coming months our courage will be tested. Explain what courage is - admit that fear is real, and we will have to keep going despite it. Praise for the front-line heroes who are stepping up, and of whom many will die. At very least promise them a medal when this is over.
Remind people of our brave traditions. Admit that every time we start a massive global struggle, we are caught flat-footed and display stunning incompetence. But then we admit our mistakes, get back up, switch from peacetime-thinking to wartime-thinking, and do great achievements that were previously thought impossible.
Some leaders are doing this. Ours are not. Another example: We built a system where resilience was considered inefficiency, where local self-reliance was considered parochial, where communal action was considered illiberal - all because doing that boosted quarterly profits/the 24-hour news cycle/political polls, and so made the managers look good to other managers. Now, when the obvious consequence of systematizing every risk bites us in the ass, like it did in 2008, the narrative response will still be "those damn greedy Kulaks!" and "we better find a way to pretend this never happened!". The establishment is constitutionally incapable of taking responsibility for anything... Also, g oing nuts with math and graphs means you are possessed by the devil. God makes us speak in tongues, the devil makes people speak in math.
Anyone else have examples of panic so our ladies can see and understand?

Well, then, you had better just rush right out and stock up -- immediately -- just as so many other clueless idiots people are doing.
Really, Miss Gamer, have you nothing better to do with your time than to sit around playing Doomsday? I'm not really paying too much attention to this nonsense, Brother Jeb. However, there are a couple of things you mention that astound me.

Anyone who thinks that twice 72 is 142 can safely be ignored.

Those scaremongers are really missing the point here. What President Trump has achieved, in blocking travel from mainland Europe (though only the hated EU countries) while allowing people to travel freely from Britain and Ireland, is threefold:
1. He has annoyed the French.
B. He has ensured that there will be no disruption of the St Patrick's Day celebrations, with Irishmen ( whose parades have stupidly been cancelled) free to travel to New York, Boston and other cities to enjoy the festivities there.
C. He has shown his support for Brexit Britain, which will be inundated with Europeans stopping over in London on their way to the Godly USA. While they are in London, they can attend soccerball games, theaters and restaurants and generally support the economy. If they choose to travel via Scotland or Ireland instead, there are some very excellent golf resorts to while away the stopover time.
Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Thank you, and God bless you, Mr President.

I think the missing 2 cases are the people who had already stocked up on toilet paper.

So that's the political elites, but where are the cultural elites?
And where are the celebrities? Where is the online-only fundraising concert, raising money for, well, everything at this point. The crowd can scream via Skype.
Use it to raise awareness of what can be done with telecommuting. Use it to tell people how to wash their hands properly - make a dance out of it. Give people something entertaining enough that they aren't tempted to go outside.
Aging rock stars, go out in a blaze or glory, rather than the blaze of whatever Tom Hanks is in right now.

Historical oratory is overrated:
Brother Trump can do this. He's just busy, that's all.

Please, before you act, consider the consequences of panic. Italian prison riots. Monkeys left to find their own food*. Basketball hoops undunked. Cruise ships sickening only barnacles. Empty store shelves raising the specter of unwiped butts ahead.
SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
* No tourists means nobody feed the monkeys. Bet you didn't think the bread riots would star so soon, did you?

I am not panicking. I have no reason to panic. I bought two large freezers and filled them up with food. Also second generator just in case, and plenty of gasoline (so cheap!). I bought so many canned foods there's barely space to walk from room to room. Currently in the process of buying all toilet paper I can find, and I got 14 years worth of Jim Bakker's dry foods. The only thing I don't have is 14 years worth of potable water, that's next on my list after the toilet paper. Toilet paper is way more important than water!

Berniebros might attack me for posting Reagan, but I identify him as a xiozzisexual, so shame on you hypothetical Berniebros for cissplaining someone who is identified as a sexual minority.
Trigger Warning: the text you have just read may have caused: flashbacks to historical oppression, normalization of whiteness, hegemonic hyper-masculinity (if I must say so myself), assumption of genders, species, and/or status as a living being, other problematic sins which are yet to be discovered and outlawed but I should still be (eventually) punished for.

I had a slight panic earlier today when the news came out that the President has (very wisely) added citizens of Britain and Ireland to his list of undesirables, so that with effect from Monday only US citizens will be permitted to enter the USA.
A quick check revealed that several of the children's US passports have expired. Indeed. the youngest two (21 months and 8 months) have never even had passports, though of course their citizenship is in order. But a quick call to one of my girlfriends at the embassy has sorted it out and I just need to pop up there on Monday with the paperwork.
I don't even need to produce the children for inspection - thank goodness for Suzanne's influence - so I'll take advantage of the trip to do a little shopping while Bond Street is so quiet. If any TC™ ladies have any requests, just drop me a message on JesOS-chat. My treat.

I regret saying this. They have taken my idea and used to create borderline pornography. DONOTGOOGLE!
On the other hand, hazmat suits are not very revealing. A good modest hazmat suit with a matching purse SHOULD be the latest fashion statement, but it turns out the liberal elite would rather die than give up their sluttery.

Sister Sally, I think I have identified at least part of the problem here. Why oh why oh why do they only come in such a limited range of colors? They are mostly either white - so impractical for the busy wife and mother - or a shade of yellow even more virulent than the virus. Nobody looks good in that.
Is there any reason not to make them in a delicate shade of, say, powder blue or one of the subtler pinks? And a embossed-effect fabric would add interest to the garment. This is probably a question for Sister Mitza.

When this is over, and the last sinner dies from the virus, we will see several new statues built of Touchdown Jesus:
Isaiah 24:1-3 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty (2)...as the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. (3) The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken his word.
