Why economic depressions are a good thing -
02-24-2009, 08:48 AM
Former Bush speechwriter and current Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson reminds us of the "recession's hidden virtues...Times of economic stress," he writes, "can also be times of cultural renewal.""During an economic crisis, Americans return to a language of morality. Perhaps excess and recklessness are vices that deserve social stigma. Perhaps frugality and prudence are personal virtues as well as practices that prevent economic collapse. Perhaps there is a distinction between securing our needs and being dominated by our wants...
...But capitalism may be self-correcting in this area, as it is in many others. A recession causes suffering that can overwhelm hope. It can also lead to the rediscovery of virtues that make sustained prosperity possible -- and that add nonmaterial richness to our lives. Sometimes grace can arrive through an unexpected door."
The National Review agrees: "Recessions are part of capitalism. They happen every so often...Recessions are therapeutic. They cleanse excess from the economy. Think about excessive risk speculation, leverage, and housing. Recessions are curative: They restore balance....
Note that while most suffering is good for the soul, this does not apply to certain people: "On the other hand, domestic corporate profits are down 20 percent from their peaks of late 2006. Since profits are the mother's milk of stocks, businesses, and the economy, we will need to see profit improvement..."
Shame on the democrats and the efforts to end this soul-cleansing, culture-renewing second depression. And shame on them for pretending that they are helping the poor. After all, in the words of Discovery Institute co-founder George Gilder: "The poor, most of all, need the spur of their own poverty."

Bravo Brother!
I don't know what all the whining is about from the demoncrats.
The 1930's depresion never hurt anyone, and in fact caused a great Christian revival in this country. When you can't eat, you are forced to pray. GLORY!

According to Pastor Pistle's latest edict, all True Christians™ need to start preparing for a communist state, one world government and a general economic collapse. Here is his analysis of the situation:
Quote:
Governance by committee doesn't work and has never worked. Nowhere in the Bible do you read that GOD allowed anyone to sit around and vote on which of His Commandments they wanted and which they didn't care for. They were told what to do and smited in an instant if they didn't.
It worked then and it will work now. I want everyone to begin to prepare for the day which is coming soon.
(1) Every TRUE CHRISTIAN™ man, woman and child is to be armed. Bobby-Joe Tabor will make sure this is being done is a timely manner.
(2) The church will give each member a map showing where one LDS family lives. When you hear the code-phrase 'Vote for Proposition 8' broadcast on the Landover Radio Network you must go to the house shown on your individual map and collect the years' worth of food and water from the LDS family, since they won't be needing it (refer to #1 above).
Further instructions will be posted as the situation develops.

Clearly Jesus has sent this tribulation presidency on us for a reason. So America will turn from secularism and return to Him. Simply put Mrs Palin is too good for America and this country doesn't deserve her.
Time to reclaim our FREEDOM from the “Mullah in Chief” and his growing activist voter hoards of socialists, communists, anti-Semites, anti-Christians, atheists, radical gays and lesbians, feminists, illegal immigrants, Muslims, anti-Anglo whites and others.

That's the least of it! One of these days, I'll tell you about the Christian revival that happened in Europe!

Why risk a depression when you can have a good old fashioned crusade?

You need to open everyone's hearts to Jesus' unconditional love so they have the proper fear of Hell to go fight in one of the Lord's Wars. Yes friend, one day soon our troops will be bring Freedom® to all the occupied capitals of the world like Tehran, Pyongyang, Damascus, Ottawa, New York City and Paris. One day The Lord has shown us Mrs Sarah Palin will be president! GLORY!

Clearly friend you need to tune into our discussion about the urban myth of rape.
Mrs Palin was correct in refusing to fund a drunen harlots trying to figure who they slept with last night.

Incest? Rape? Is this some kind of new stimulus program the democrats are advocating?
I want all the details, with photos if possible.

If that's the best writing you can manage, I imagine you'll be in a similar line as soon as your mother tells you that you can't continue to live in her basement.
Bible boring? Nonsense!
Try Bible in a Year with Brother V, or join Shirlee and the kids as they discuss Real Bible Stories!

My father spoke to me of that time - it was terrible, he was poor, the servants were poor, holidays were restricted to 4 times a year and no more than 3 weeks each. Oh, and the travel to Cape Town was dreadful - a first-class cabin on the journey was apparently the equivalent of the lifetime's wages of our 2nd pastry cook - so although dismissing her did solve one problem, my father had to do without cookies for over a month.
So don't come here telling me that we Bathfires don't know about suffering.

I think not. What reason would he have? As the Lord is my witness, his trips to South Africa were necessitated by his shareholdings in De Beers Consolidated Mines and directorships of various other concerns.

Friend,
We know about suffering, there is no need to be sarcastic with us. This is not a homer forum. Times are tough, the reason is quite simple; people have become self obsessed and turned away from Jesus. Just look at the 3% tax increase on the top 1% and the false judgment outrage over the AiG bonuses. How far from Christ can you get?

Tell me Phil, is there a direct link between listening to AC/DC and being a heathen, illiterate plebeian? Or is it just coincidence in your case?
