Love Jesus Day 311: John 19-21 - 10-15-2016, 08:44 AM

John 19. It's Crucifixion time again! The fact that four independent second-hand eyewitness reports (the Gospels) all tell us about the same thing - that Jesus was Crucified - is exactly the kind of evidence needed to prove to the ignorant masses of the ancient days that Jesus was real and that He died for us. Before crucifixion we are, again, reminded of the foul play by Romans and Jews to Sacrifice Jesus exactly in the way He designed and that was required for the Redemption of our sins. Again, we meet Mr. Pilate. We learn that God is greater than any secular authority.

John 19:11
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

This is at first glance baffling. All the power given to Mr. Pilate to execute Jesus come from above, from Heaven, from God who is Jesus (we covered that in John 1). Hence, God who is Jesus (we covered that in John 1) has the greater sin. This is actually necessary, as the sins of the rotten mankind had to be Redeemed, i.e., carried to the Cross and beyond by the Sacrifice. Atheists claim that there would have been an easier way out to an omnipotent being (Revelation 19:6), but is was up to God who is Jesus (John 1, remember) to decide how to do it. His call (Exodus 3:14). His rules. These rules dictated that Jews, once again, became the Christ-killers. A necessary but a repulsive deed by them.

John 19:18
Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

There were quite a quiverfull of women called Mary there watching all this (John 19:25) and we now learn more words that Jesus uttered on His Cross.

John 19:26-27
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Here we also learn that Jesus did not Love all His disciples equally. We'll return to this interesting detail in John 21. Jesus also had a drink and then He died for a while.

John 19:29-30
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

A "spunge" is what they called "sponges" back then and this is hyssop.

Next, familiar stuff. Burial, etc., and we go on to John 20. We start this Chapter with lots of running. Mary Magdalene first runs (presumably) to the Sepulchre (a kind of tomb). Jesus is not there. She runs to Peter. No Jesus there, either. Peter and another disciple both run back to the Sepulchre. They make it a race and the other one wins (John 20:4). Probably Peter is still a bit depressed as he denied Jesus Thrice a while earlier. Or he is out of shape. Nevertheless, Jesus is still not there. The disciples go home, apparently walking and exhausted after all the running. They won't find Jesus there, either. Dammit. Mary, however, stays (apparently she is too tired to even walk) and Jesus finally appears. It took some serious running.

John 20:14-16
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Jesus is back! Hallelujah! Now that He's back He appears before the others, also, and no more mindless running is required but probably everyone is running around Jesus just for fun. Thomas has his doubts so he is allowed to touch and feel Jesus.

John 19:27
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

Thus, the Gospel of John comes to its End. The Author (under the influence of the Holy Spirit, obviously) admits that there would have been many more stories to tell but that the ones listed in the Gospel are adequate to bring sinners to Jesus! Glory!

John 20:30-31.
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

The Gospel of John is thus finished but it continues into the next Chapter, John 21. It's another Miracle by Jesus! A New Chapter after The End! Apparently, some of the other signs not written in the book were too juicy to leave out. We are about to hear more.

Jesus decides to do some serious rest and recreation before returning to Heaven. He goes fishing with Peter and the gang. He goes incognito to have some fun at the expense of the disciples.

John 21:6
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Jesus then makes them dinner. He must realize that they are still hungry after all the running in Chapter 20.

John 21:11-12
Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

It's time to get even with Peter, who denied Jesus thrice. Now he has to tell Jesus three times that they're still in love, still best buddies.

John 21:17
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

This means that Peter must tell the sinners about Jesus. This is how the magnificent movement of True Christianity™ that has helped quite a few people reach Heaven got started! Jesus and Peter are best pals again, but not the bestest.

John 21:20-22
Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

The Great Love of Jesus's Earthly Life, the disciple He loved, could thus tarry but Peter was to follow in Jesus's footsteps spreading the Gospel. However, the True Love™ of Jesus did not remain idle: he wrote the Gospel you have just finished.

John 21:24
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

At this point we would like to know more, but we shall not. There is a reason to it. Jesus did so many things that the Earth would consist of libraries only if all that had been written down.

John 21:25
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Next Time: The Disciples become Apostles and Boldly Go Where No-one Has Ever Gone Before!

Yours In Christ,

Elmer
