Numbers 25-27

Today we get:

• Whoredoms
• Phinally it's Phinehas

Numbers 25

1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

Man, these people can't stay on the straight and narrow for more than one chapter of the Bible (KJV1611) at a time. Well, unless you count the chapters where it's just names, like the next chapter. But every chapter where anything REAL happens, They do something to draw the ire of the LORD.

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

Where was Moses when this stuff started to happen? Was he just too old and stuck in the tentbernacle chatting with the LORD and didn't even notice that the people were diluting their blood line, and worshiping other gods?

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.


Baal peor is the Baal (a title for a false god throughout the bible) and peor is the area that they were at, therefore Baalpeor is the Baal of Peor. Maybe, or maybe not the same Baal as is later in the bible.

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

God DEMANDED human sacrifice to appease Himself.

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

Everyone that worshiped Baalpeor earned death.

Now, we get to see Phinehas in action.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

But, wasn't Moses married to a Midianite?

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

PRAISE JESUS!!! Phinehas (Moses nephew) threw a javelin through the man and the woman. The death of these two, stayed the wrath of the LORD. And people seem to think that Jewishism doesn't involve human sacrifice.

9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

God killed 24,000 before Phinehas killed those two, which placated the LORD. PRAISE JESUS for Phinehas!

God then appoints Phinehas and his children (forever) to be His priest.

Then God commands Moses to have all the Midianites killed.

Numbers 26

MORE names and numbers.

God tells Moses and Eleazar (he used to tell Moses and Aaron, but remember Aaron died recently):

START COUNTING!!!

4 Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt.

Here we get the names of all the offspring of the twelve children of Israel, and some of the more interesting stories of some of their deaths.

1. Reuben, 43,730. (Dathan and Abiram were of Reuben)
2. Simeon, 22,200.
3. Gad, 40,500.
4. Judah, 76,500. (Er and Onan were of Judah)
5. Issachar, 64,300.
6. Zebulon, 60,500.
7a. Joseph, Manasseh, 52,700.
7b. Joseph, Ephriam, 32,500.
8. Benjamin, 45,600.
9. Dan, 64,400.
10. Asher, 53,400.
11. Naphtali, 45,400.

51 These were the numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty.

601,730.

53 Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

God says for Moses to divide the promised land according to the size of each tribe. A larger tribe gets more land, a smaller tribe gets less.

12. Levi, 23,000. But they weren't numbered with the rest, because they didn't get any of the land.

64 But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

65 For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

Praise Jesus, all the rest of the people, except for Caleb and Joshua had died. So, this massive wandering clan of 2 million or so people was being led by one REALLY old man, and two slightly old men, and the rest weren't even around at the time of the first numbering.

Numbers 27

Five daughters in the Manasseh part of Joseph's tribe didn't have any brothers, so they go up to Moses and Eleazar and ask for some land, otherwise, they won't have anywhere to live. (Now, why they didn't have husbands, that's not told).

3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.

4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.

So Moses goes and talks to the LORD. Who gives him the divine method of inheritance.

1. Sons.
2. Daughters.
3. Brothers.
4. Uncles.
5. kinsmen (cousins).

God then tells Moses to go up a mountain and see the promised land, and when he sees it, he will die. Remember, Moses doesn't get to enter the promised land because he hit the rock twice to get water. Even though God said nobody from the previously numbered generation (except for Caleb and Joshua) would get to enter.

God says Moses needs to pick a successor.

17 Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

Even though when Moses was the shepherd, the people transgressed at least ten times.

18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

Who didn't see that coming? Of course, everyone is familiar with the name of Joshua, so it's kind of obvious that Joshua would be the one who leads the people after Moses.

Thus ends todays reading, so what have we learned?

1. The people are whores! Always have been, probably always will be. They are like that.

2. The number of fighting men went down from 603,550, to 601,730, this was not only due to old age, but also God consuming several thousand of them due to His divine wrath.

3. Even though God already promised the priesthood to Aaron's offspring, He promised it even tighter to the offspring of Phinehas.

4. Joshua, succeeded Moses.

If God wanted to, He could have used His book to record the names of all 601,730 Israelites. Praise Him for His mercy!

The children of Israel owe Phinehas big time for making God happy.
