Default Day 211. Isaiah 31-33 - 10-09-2009, 06:46 PM

Isaiah 31-33

Isaiah 31

1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

This whole chapter is a warning against having an alliance with Egypt.

3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

Remember, about 700 years before (in roughly 1400 BC) Moses led the hebrews out of Egypt. Prior to that, all the firstborn were killed. Now, roughly 700 years later, Egypt has forgiven the hebrews and is willing to enter into an alliance with them. If this ratio of disaster to forgiveness holds true, then in about 700 years, the United States might enter into an alliance with Al Queda.

5 As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.

Isaiah was dead set against an alliance with Egypt. He knew God would protect them. Although, I'm reminded of the parable of the guy who's house was being flooded. He went onto his roof as the waters rose up. As his neighbors fled, they offered him a ride in their boat, he refused, saying God would protect him. The waters got higher, and the city sent people around to evacuate the rest, he refused, saying God would protect him. Finally, the national guard in a helicopter offered him a ride to safety, he refused, saying God would protect him. Shortly thereafter, he died. He got to heaven, when he did, he asked God why he didn't protect him; to which God replied... I sent you 2 boats and a helicopter, what more do you want?

God didn't send Egypt. The people sought Egypt.

6 Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.

Now we get to find out what could happen if the people would actually follow God.

7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.

Getting rid of idols is a great start. In fact, it's all that would have been needed to get God to fight for them.

8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.

God will just make them run away. All they would have to do is get rid of their idols... As we all know, they didn't.

Isaiah 32

1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

This is either talking about Hezekiah, Josiah or Jesus. Probably Hezekiah, although you never really can tell exactly who he's talking about. It's definitely not Ahaz.

2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

The spiritual renewal in Israel will be like a river in a desert.

4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.

People who don't understand now, will understand then.

5The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

A churl is a common person, of very low social status. It was the lowest rank of people who weren't slaves. Remember, this is from a time when a person of low status earned their way there.

The definition of liberal here means, free man. (German word for life is Leben; which has the same root as liberal; someone who lives their life) Here we see liberal compared to the churl. The churl is a person of low social status, who works evil; the liberal is a person of high social status, who works good. When this good king shows up, he's going to expose the bad people to scrutiny, he'll also show off the good people for praise.

8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

Wierd... the NIV has the word "liberal" as noble. The NLT has it as generous. Contemporary English has it as helpful. New Century has it as good leader.

Now, we're going to get into some crap that has to happen before this good leader arrives. Isaiah doesn't flow very well. He skips back and forth, trying to confuse his audience. Oh yeah, he was told to do that back in Isaiah 6:9 to tell things to people so that they wouldn't understand what they hear. He's still causing some confusion more than 2700 years later.

10 Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.

The wine will spoil, and the harvest will be ruined.

13 Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

There will be a lot of weeds.

15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

All this crap will happen, and then the spirit will arrive. There will be a revival in Israel. This will cause the fields to become better. The fields that are already good will get better (I thought there were no good fields).

17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

So, because of this spirit, the righteous will be for peace. Where are these righteous people now?

Isaiah 33

1 Woe to thee that spoilest, and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.

Assyria is about to attack. The jews are claiming they didn't do anything to provoke it. Just like the U.S. was attacked without provocation by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. Just like the U.S. was attacked for no reason whatsoever on 9/11 by people who just wanted to kill, and didn't have any lists of grievances.

2 O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.

The people are finally turning back to God. It's about time. All that it took was for Ahaz to die.

3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered.

Remember back to 2 Kings 19:35, the LORD sent an angel to kill 185,000 Assyrians.

4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.

Then the remaining people of Judah went out and took back what was taken from them.

10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.

That sounds like something Hulk Hogan would say.

13 Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might.

So, here's what Sennacherib thinks happened. He thinks that he got all the money out of Israel, and so he left.

14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

Once again, Isaiah switches gears. Sinners are afraid, good people are happy.

17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.

Who is the beautiful king? Is it Hezekiah, or Jesus, or some other messianic figure?

20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

This sounds like messianic prophecy.

24 And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.

Iniquity is used in 262 verses in the KJV (1611). Normally, iniquity isn't forgiven. Here we see that when the messiah comes, the iniquity WILL be forgiven. If you are iniquitous, hope that you are alive when the messiah comes, and that you didn't die from the wrath of the LORD, that is immediately preceding.

So what have we learned today?

1. God is ultimately going to help Judah, too bad he didn't do the same for the north.

2. Assyria attacked for no good reason. At least no reason that was mentioned.

3. The messiah will come (back) when all the people finally turn back to God.

Direct Scripture against the Camp David Accords. The Word is quite clear here that Israel shouldn't enter into agreements with Egypt, except that whole highway thing from earlier in the Chapter.

Hopelessly behind in his reading,

Levi.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.
