Zechariah 1-3

Zechariah 1

1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

Zechariah means "Yahweh has remembered". Zechariah was the grandson of Iddo, this is not the Iddo from back in 2 Chronicles 13, who was around during Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijah; this is a different Iddo.

If you remember back to Zephaniah (two days ago) Zephaniah was from the royal line, from Hezekiah. Zechariah comes from a line of prophets and priests. Both are from well to do families. They would have been respected and listened to. If God called a hobo to be his prophet, no one would listen to him, that's why God tended to pick people who would be listened to and respected. Sometimes these guys did crazy things (like sleep on their sides for years) but because they were God's chosen mouthpiece (and came from good families) they were respected.

If you look at the date, this is two months after Haggai 1.

4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.

Is Zechariah talking to the people, or is he talking to just the priestly caste?

6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

This could be a statement for all the people, but it's probably just for the priests. God gave his commandments, but the people (especially the priests who allowed the temple to be corrupted) rejected it.

Zechariah then has a vision.

8 I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.

Myrtle trees (bushes) are evergreen shrubs with dark green, glossy leaves. They are fragrant. It is believed "in the bottom" means the Kidron Valley, it's also called the "Valley of Jehoshaphat" which means "the valley where God will judge". The man on the horse is obviously God.

10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

So the myrtle trees represented the people who had been scattered. Possibly the remnant. It makes sense that if you are kicked out of the city, the nearest place to go hide is down in the valley, among the myrtle.

14 So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

15 And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

God is tired of having his people hang out in the valley. He doesn't like that his people have it rough and that the heathen are living luxuriously up in Jerusalem. So...

16 Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

I'm'a go take back what is mine.

Zechariah 2

1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.

Zechariah has a vision of someone measuring Jerusalem.

An angel tells him that the city won't have walls, that God will be a wall of fire protecting it.

10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.

The people will return.

12 And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.

God likes Jerusalem best. Or He wants to like it best.

Zechariah 3

1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

Zechariah (the priest) has visions of the priest...

2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

People say that God can't have sin in his presence, but there are so many times when God is in the presence of Satan. Makes me wonder if the prodigal son isn't Satan.

3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.

God is going to restore the priestly caste. He's going to take away the filth and iniquity, and clothe them in nice garments and a neat-o hat.

Zechariah sees the rebuilding of the temple as a great thing for the priests. They will take their rightful place as the person who does the LORD's work.

Remember back to yesterday, Haggai promised that Zerubbabel would be wearing the signet (Haggai 2:23). Today Zechariah promises Joshua (who was also listed in Haggai) that he'll be wearing the mitre.

7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

This won't last long.

8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

Emphasis on BRANCH is not mine, that's in the KJV1611. Zechariah used it in all caps. The assumption is that the BRANCH is the Messiah, Jesus.

9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

10 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.

God is going to engrave the engraving on a stone (that occupied the empty place in the temple where the Ark of the Covenant should have been), that will remove iniquity. Then everyone will be neighbors.

More on that BRANCH.

"my servant the BRANCH"

1 Chronicles 17:4 Go and tell David my servant...

"David my servant".

"my servant, David" is used many many times.

Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

So the stem is Jesse (father of David) and a BRANCH is coming out. Zechariah is saying the branch is coming back.

The branch isn't really a branch though. It's more than just a branch, it's a sprout. Like a tree that you cut down (Jesse's family) every now and then another part of that tree will come up from the stump. A new branch. That new branch is Jesus.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Because Jesus loved wine so much, he turned the branch into a vine. Jesus IS the vine. Jesus is the branch.

So what have we learned today?

1. Zechariah foresaw the return of the priests as being respectable.

2. Zechariah saw God among the myrtle.

3. Jesus is the BRANCH.
