Default Day 120. 2 Chronicles 4-6 - 02-05-2008, 05:48 AM

2 Chronicles 4-6

Today we get:
  • Temple dimensions and decorations
  • Placement of the ark
  • Solomon's blessing

2 Chronicles 4

1 Moreover he made an altar of brass, twenty cubits the length thereof, and twenty cubits the breadth thereof, and ten cubits the height thereof.

An altar of brass, brass would have been for priest use and not the LORD's table.

2 Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and five cubits the height thereof; and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about.

Ah, the infamous molten sea. The thing that atheists say proves the Bible (KJV1611) has a mistake. The first time the molten sea was mentioned I showed how it's dimensions are not incorrect. I will not go over them again, but it's in 1 Kings 7.

Remember the molten sea sat on 12 brass ox.

7 And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form, and set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left.

Many things in the temple were done in tens. Lavers on the molten sea; candlesticks; and tables. Remember there are 10 commandments; there were 10 generations from Adam to Noah; 10 generations from Noah to Abraham; and we are to give one tenth as a tithe.

What is only slightly more interesting, is that the molten sea sat on oxen. There were brass oxen in the temple. Remember back in Exodus that Aaron got in trouble for building the golden calf; but then that was for worship, it's just odd that in the LORD's house, that the vessel for cleansing (baptizing) the priests, sat on top of oxen.

11 And Huram made the pots, and the shovels, and the basons. And Huram finished the work that he was to make for king Solomon for the house of God;

Hiram was definitely a well rounded individual; not enough that freemasons worship him, but still he did a lot of stuff.

He made the pillars, Boaz and Jachin; he made the molten sea; he made pretty much everything inside the temple.

2 Chronicles 5

1 Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God.

The temple was not just the place for worship; it was also the vault that housed most of the treasure of the nation.

2 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.

Ark moving time is a time for celebration.

5 And they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

The tentbernacle also served as a storage area for ... um... God's stuff.

6 Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.

Moving the ark is also a time for a great bloodbath. Granted no PEOPLE were sacrificed, but there must've been a whole lot of killing because earlier we've gotten accounts of thousands of animals being sacrificed, and this time, there are too many to be numbered. And we know how much the jews like to count; so if they lost track, it must've been a WHOLE lot.

7 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:

The ark (and the LORD) is home.

10 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables which Moses put therein at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

Again I ask, what happened to the manna and Aaron's staff?

God liked His home so much that he filled the room with smoke.

14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

When God's presence is thick, it's hard to stand around and do your job.

2 Chronicles 6

Solomon mentions his greatness in building the LORD a house.

3 And the king turned his face, and blessed the whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel stood.

Solomon didn't quite carry on as much as his father David did; but he did speak for a while.

5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:

David seemed to love babbling on and on about how he was chosen to be king; Solomon being wise, probably didn't do that.

6 But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.

Uh, never mind. Apparently, with wisdom comes the ability to self promote.

10 The LORD therefore hath performed his word that he hath spoken: for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.

Thanks for everything God; here, have a house. I guess isn't that what professional athletes always do? When they get their first check, they always say they are gonna give their mother's a new house (they don't know their fathers). Solomon just did what everyone else does when they come into cash (not that being the son of the king meant he grew up poor), they build their father (this time their Father that art in heaven) a house.

14 And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts:

Which covenant is Solomon mentioning? Most likely he's reminding the LORD of the promise to let his family be the king FOREVER!

15 Thou which hast kept with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him; and spakest with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.

Yep, that's the covenant.

16 Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.

3000 years ago, Solomon was worried that at some point his offspring wouldn't be king.

21 Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear thou from thy dwelling place, even from heaven; and when thou hearest, forgive.

It wasn't all just begging to preserve the royal line; he also asked the LORD to forgive people.

23 Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by recompensing his way upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness.

What does that mean?

Requite means to repay. Solomon didn't ask the LORD to forgive the wicked; Solomon asked the LORD to REPAY, RETALIATE, RETURN wickedness to bad people. Payback is a bitch.

24 And if thy people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee; and shall return and confess thy name, and pray and make supplication before thee in this house;

Solomon either prophesied that the people would be taken away, or this part was added by Ezra at the end of the Babylonian captivity.

25 Then hear thou from the heavens, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest to them and to their fathers.

Was this part just added by Ezra to help rally the captive Jews into wanting to return to Israel?

30 Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men

Only the LORD knows the hearts of men; the devil just assumes and guesses; but God knows.

33 Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.

Solomon allowed everyone to worship the LORD; they wouldn't fall under the jewish laws, but they would at least be able to beg the LORD to help.

37 Yet if they bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly;

Nobody up to this point had been carried captive; which is what leads me to think Ezra may have added this part 500 years later.

38 If they return to thee with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, whither they have carried them captives, and pray toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, and toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house which I have built for thy name:

At the end of the Babylonian captivity, most of the jews that were taken away chose to stay there, they had a comfortable life, only about 5000 people went back; so Ezra probably needed some "prophetic" words from Solomon (or another leader the people truly respected) to rally the people into wanting to return.

42 O LORD God, turn not away the face of thine anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant.

David was the man of war.

So what have we learned today?

1. Hiram was a jack of all trades and master of most.
2. The temple was decorated with brass oxen, not golden calves.
3. Solomon in addition to asking for his kingdom to last forever; also asked for his people to be returned... in the same chapter!
