Default Day 12. Genesis 34-36 - 09-17-2007, 03:20 AM

Genesis 34-36

What will we learn today:

Dinah (ah the story of Dinah)

Jacob moving again

Esau's lineage.

FIRST, Dinah's story. This is truly a story of brotherly love.

Genesis 34:1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Sounds innocent enough.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

It doesn't say she was raped, it doesn't say she was coerced, it just says Shechem took her virginity.

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

Kind of reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, don't you think?

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

So, Shechem begs his father Hamor to come up with some kind of deal with Jacob for his daughter. Dinah's brothers don't know what is going on yet, they are still in the field.

7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

Laying with Jacob's daughter is one of the most offensive things that we've come across thus far in the Bible (KJV1611).

8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

Hamor says his boy loves Dinah, and asks basically, what will it take for him to get her? He really loves her, so what will it take for us all to live peacefully together, with your sons marrying our daughters and our sons marrying your daughters? He offered Jacob's boys a blank check... what price did they put in?

13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

So that's what the boys decided would be best, if the men were circumcised. Probably so that they could be considered clean, there couldn't be any deeper or subtle motive from Jacob's boys...

19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

They said yes...

Then they went and told the rest of the men of the city what they decided.

21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

Through their convincing argument, Shechem and Hamor, talked the entire town into becoming circumcised. Because Jacob's boys are peaceable.

24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

Every single one...

25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

Um... What?

Simeon and Levi took their swords, went from house to house, and slew all the males. Not when they were at their best, but when the guys were still sore from having their foreskins hacked off. Truly, they are sons of Jacob.

The other 9 boys didn't take place in the slaughter, but they did their part after.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

Because their sister was defiled, they killed every man in the town, then like conquering pirates, took everything of value from the town.

28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

For one guy falling in love with their sister, the boys of Jacob killed and looted an entire city. PRAISE JESUS!!! A lesson could be learned here for all True Christians ™.

30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

Sometimes, children can be a little overzealous. The real problem in the boys eyes, probably wasn't that their sister was loved by someone of a different race, it was that he had sex with her before marriage. Girls should remain pure before marriage.

Genesis 35

1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Convenient timing by the LORD telling Jacob to leave right after his boys made a stink with the locals.

5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

The towns may have also heard that this group of 11 boys destroyed an entire town, and might have been a little afraid.

Jacob gets to where he's going.

10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

God had to remind Jacob that he changed his name back in Genesis 32:28, because apparently some people were still calling him Jacob, when the LORD said, his name was Israel.

11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

Fruitful and multiply... God said that to Adam, Noah and now Jacob/Israel.

Jacob/Israel got Rebekah pregnant, it was tough labor.

17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

Her dieing wish was to name her son Benoni; Jacob/Israel called him Benjamin.

Jacob/Israel makes it back to the land of his father and brother Esau/Edom then, Isaac dies.

Esau and Jacob/Israel bury him, then Esau leaves.

Genesis 36

6 And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.

The rest of Genesis 36 is the generations of Esau. If there are any questions on it, I or another of the pastors will attempt to answer it.

That pretty much ends todays lesson.

So what have we learned.

1. Don't have sex with an unmarried daughter of Jacob/Israel.

2. If you are circumcised and sore, don't be surprised if Levi and Simeon show up and kill you.

3. When you kill all the men of a town, you are fully entitled to take everything in the town.

4. When you destroy a town, there's a possibility that the rest of the area may want to harm you. You should flee back to your father.

5. Rachel gave birth to Jacob/Israel's 12th son, Benoni; Jacob instead named him Benjamin.

PRAISE JESUS

This has been my favorite lesson so far. I never knew that Jacob and his family were so shrewd and vengeful. He must have really been favored by God.

Thank you for the lessons, Brother V, they are much appreciated!

Psalm 139:19-20
Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
