Luke 2:
7] And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Now it appears it's bad not to be swaddled or salted:
Ezekiel 16:
[4] And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.
[5] None eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.
So it appears that God wants Christian babies swaddled. Certainly if it was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for our children?
What exactly is swaddling for for heathens who know no better?
Swaddling is a time honored practice of wrapping babies snugly in swaddling cloths, blankets or similar cloth so that movement of the arms and legs is tightly restricted. Swaddling bands were often used to further restrict the baby.
The tighter you swaddle the better. Then babies can't develop nasty habits like touching themselves in bad places.
