  • Hello Landover Baptist Church

    Hello,

I stumbled across your forum about a month ago accidently. I was using facebook to communicate with friends from college who have been scattered across the United States, and saw an advertisement which had a map with the word Jesusland. Not being the typical advertisement you see at a place like facebook, I clicked on it and ended up here. I have read through several threads and was astounded with how grounded in thought the people are here. If you all would be interested in engaging in a dialogue with me about the beliefs and customs of Landover Baptist Church, it would be appreciated. I am not very familiar with Baptists. I have been to a Baptist service, but from my current understanding, not all Baptists have the same set of beliefs.

Being a musician (cellist) and a music teacher, I am really interested in Shape Note/Sacred Harp Singing. I was not exposed to this type of singing unfortunately until graduate school. I heard recordings and was immediately affected by the power of the song. I have never heard Shape Note Singing live, but was also wondering if you used it in worship. There seems to be an opportunity to learn here.

Robert, NO ONE stumbles across this forum accidentally. It is the direct and Divine intervention of GOD Himself which brought you here. I cannot discuss music with you....I am a preacher. But we have several professionals who can discuss anything you like. Is Yo Yo here today?

    No? OK, another harpist?

Interesting that you mention the harp. The person who I attended Baptist services with has a daughter who is really interested in playing the harp. (The only person I know who wants to play the harp.) They haven't been able to buy her one since they tend to be a bit pricey.

If you enjoy Baroque music, Maurice Gendron was an excellent cellist. I try to emulate the tone he had when playing the Bach Cello Suites. Yo Yo tends to be a bit comercialized for me.

            Hello Pastor Ezekiel,

My name is Robert. I am a 27 year old man. I teach Jr. High music/orchestra in a public school and attended Penn State University for my undergraduate degree in Music Education.

Background on my experiences up to this point in life:
I was baptized as a Catholic. I went to church with my family and did not think much about my religion until I started to read more as I got older. I have, as I mentioned above, been to Baptist services, and also Presbyterian services, and noticed obvious differences. One time, I asked a member of the congregation at the Presbyterian why Jesus was not on the cross. Most crosses I have seen in a Catholic church have Jesus on it. Her response was, "Why should He be nailed to it? He has risen." I don't understand why you get people on here stating that Catholics do not pray to Mary. One of our prayers is "Hail Mary." I have read in the past about Catholic's prayer and many of the issues brought up about the Catholic faith. The church was very corrupt in the least during the middle ages and indulgences were given out often. I do not know if indulgences are still given to Catholics in parts of the world, but I have not heard of any at my location. These are just a few questions I am still investigating myself. I am not here to argue any point, since it seems many people come here to do so. I am merely trying to give a background about myself so you know more about me, since of course I am on your forums. I have read your forums about religions and posts about Mary and found them very interesting and have added them to my personal research.

I have not read the Bible, but have only heard readings from the Bible. This is probably what you might assume since I have a Catholic background. There are a few teachers who gather together every Friday at the school we teach at before students arrive, and have a Bible session. I have been attending these sessions. They all have a Bible, and I was quite embarassed when I was the only one who did not. Also, everyone there seemed to know their way around the Bible, while I was lost. They of course let me use one of their extra Bibles and are teaching me how to use it.

My main reason for posting in the first place was about Sacred Harp singing. One of the greatest ways to show praise to the Lord is to sing. I was amazed by the power of this type of singing. I have been unable to find a church in my area that sing with praise they way Sacred Harp singers do. I am looking for first hand sources and thought perhaps the Landover Baptist Church uses the Sacred Harp.

-Robert the Guppy Cruncher (that is what a co-worker calls me since I was raised a Catholic. We eat fish during lent on Fridays for religious reasons, which I have learned actually came from for a non-religious purpose.)

We do in fact know what the Roman Catholic "Church" preaches as official dogma. This does not show what every Catholic believes or what they take from the "Church" and it's teachings. The best tactic we know is that unless a person says what they believe they are lumped in with the official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
It does not surprise me to hear that you have not read the Holy Bible for yourself. This is a fact that many Catholics try to deny that their church imposes on them. They claim all kinds of things like that the time that the Church did the whole thing with chaining Bibles to pulpits is done. In fact it's not done and it's being done in different guises and methods. They chain the Bible out of hearts and minds. Best wishes coming into a newfound faith for God and a renewed understanding of what it means to be a Christian.
I have no sig to put here. Just haven't thought about it yet and don't have an idea what to do. Got suggestions? PM me and let me know.

                        Robert -

No, Landover does not do Sacred Harp sings.

I and a few other members of the Ladies of Landover attended one in Cedar Rapids a couple of months ago to see how it seemed to us. The people singing were waving their hands in the air, tears streaming down their faces, beaming wide grins of exaltation. The beautiful tones rose Heavenward in a wall of joyous praise.

Needless to say, we were absolutely horrified! It was as though we'd stumbled upon a Pentacostal service, but someone had stolen all the snakes!

The "singers" were able to make pretty sounds, but we couldn't understand a word of it. I'm not sure, but I think they were speaking in "tongues", which is the Pentacostal's term for "nonsensical jibber-jabbering meant to show others how holy I am".

Friend, we flung about a dozen King James Bibles at those heathens, shouting rebukes, and then high-tailed it out of there and never looked back! I suggest you do the same, if you should run across such a vain collection of self-aggrandizing, God-ignoring persons!
