  • Secular quack doctor VS intelligently designed psychology

ok, id like to adress this, both as a Christian, and as a Psychologist, and one who supports scientific enquiry in general.

subliminal messaging has been a hot topic in psychology for decades, and to be blunt, there simply isnt subliminal messaging in harry potter, certainly not in a sense that would have any impact at all on their psychological state, or their behaviour.

curly hair waving in the wind looks like a lot of things, and smoke as well, its very subjective, and if you look for anything in them, your likely to find it, because your mind likes to find what its looking for, whether its there or not.

harry potter is not going to turn your children into sluts, goths, or anything else you care to state.

protecting children, and instilling good values into them is a noble cause, but by excluding them from media (which really will not harm them or their values) all you do is reinforce a belief in them that their faith is something that is restrictive and controlling, and it is this perception of being controlled that they are likely to rebel against and involve themselves in unwanted behaviour over.

i think as christians, it is our role in society to show others how to live by our example, ourselves living by Jesus examples of compassion, love, tolerance, forgiveness, and having a relationship with our God.

i think finding hidden messages in a girls hair in a poster should be far further down our priority lists than it evidently is. id like to reinforce that subliminal messaging in the sense you are describing really doesnt exist, and such paranoia only serves to fuel the fires of those who would criticise us, and our belief system at large because of such views.

Re: Subliminal messages in Harry Potter turn girls into harlots!

I am not a troll, i live by Christ, and considering psychology is my profession, i do know something about it.

of course i cannot state every word or frame of the books or films. however, subliminal messaging as a psychological phenomenon doesnt exist in the way it was originally described by the first post on this thread.

reading the satanic bible, is likely to convert you to satanism, or adopt its values.

seeing a girls hair blowing in the wind is unlikely to do so. explicit messages impact upon those who encounter them, subliminal ones (if they exist) will not, because we simply do not have the cognitive processes to allow something that we do not experience consiously, to impact upon our behaviour.

understanding the human mind is my field of interest professionally, and if there were phenomenon that would allow authors or media to influence people in an unconsious way, then i would be the first to cry against it's use.

It seems you've never studied psychological phenomenom known as "heterosexuality".
we simply do not have the cognitive processes to allow something that we do not experience consiously, to impact upon our behaviour.
The entire Book of Revelations came unconciously, in the form of a dream. Seems you only know liberal-bias psychology - not true Biblical science psychology.

      Mind? Don't you mean SOUL?

Ok, for a start, im married, to a man, so i grasp the concept of heterosexuality. I find it strange that instead of working towards finding a common ground where we can progress, your first instinct is to insult me for holding a view that differs with your own in the most inoffensive of ways.

disaproving of the content of harry potter is entirely your right and choice as an individual, and i do not disagree with that, or claim you are wrong for doing so.

I just wanted to clarify the definition of subliminal messaging.

The book of Revelations came as a dream through the Holy Spirit, such phenomena cant be compared to standard human processing, your discussing the difference between a Divine creation of the Lord, and the workings of a human mind, unless you claim the human brain is capable of the same wonders as the most divine works of God? I certainly would not say that is the case.

You raise a good point and you are quite correct, i should have made myself clearer, when i refer to the mind, i do not mean the brain, i do mean the soul, we agree on this.

So you agree that the soul is based in the heart and bowels, as proven by the Bible? (Esther 6:6, Proverbs 23:7, Isaiah 10:7, Matt 9:4) Because you're talking about the brain as if it has something to do with the soul, which it does not.

You are quite correct, when i refer to the mind, i do not mean the brain, i am referring to the soul. Humans are a marvelous creation of God, and understanding the extent of this work gives him glory.

I'd like to add that I'm married to a man, and that lashing out with insults is entirely unnecassary. As i said, I do not disagree with you on principle of faith.

I am not saying that finding the content of harry potter offensive is wrong, that is completely your choice, which is informed by our faith. I was merely aiming to clarify the definition of subliminal messaging. If you want to disaprove of harry potter, then do so because of the themes of evil gaining power over the young, or the witchcraft involved, not because you think words can be seen in an actress' hair.

The book of revelations was a vision sent by God, unless you wish to try claiming the usual function of the human brain is equal to the divine works of the Lord, then please do not try to compare them. Moreover, whilst the vision was sent in a dream, it was consious, which is why it could be remembered to be described and help spread the word of God.

The usual function of the human brain is to cool the blood. It's basically just a radiator.

Why do you keep talking about the brain as if it has something to do with psychology?

And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? -Matthew 9:4

Re: Subliminal messages in Harry Potter turn girls into harlots!

If you really are a psychologist, as you claim, you'll already know the facts in this article:

                .
DOES THE BIBLE SPEAK OF THE BRAIN?

                Ed Babinski

The Bible mentions a number of key
human organs, such as the heart, blood, bowels, liver, and kidneys,
                but never mentions...the brain.

Of course, the Bible speaks of the "head." It is a place
to be anointed and crowned and where the priests wore their miters
                (turbans)....

The ancients (including the Hebrews) all agreed that one such
organ, the primary one, in fact, was the heart. They used the
word _heart_ repeatedly, attaching enormous _emotional
_ and _moral_ significance to its behavior. The Bible
emphasizes how the _heart_ "deviseth a man's way,"
                "inspires speech" "believes," "is joyful,"
                "is deceitful," "is good" (Prov. 16:9, Mt. 12: 34, Rom. 10:10, 1 Chron. 16:10, Jer. 17:9, Lk. 6:45)

Besides the heart, the Bible also focuses
(to a lesser extent) on the emotional and moral significance of
the bowels and kidneys. Here are some of the verses in the King
James Bible in which the Greek and Hebrew terms for bowels and
                kidneys are literally translated:

My bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon
him, saith the Lord -Jer. 31:20
Be ye straitened [restrained] in your own bowels -2 Cor. 6:12

I long after you in the bowels [affection] of Christ (Philip. 1:8).

(T)he bowels of the saints are refreshed.... ®efresh my bowels
                in the Lord -Philemon 7:20

(S)hutteth up his bowels of compassion -1 John 3:17

Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins [Latin,
renes, which means kidneys, a literal translation of the Hebrew] -Ps. 73:21

My reins [kidneys] also instruct me in the night seasons -Ps.
                16:7).

Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish
the just: for the righteous God trieth the heart and reins [kidneys]
                -Ps. 7:9

Yea, my reins [kidneys] shall rejoice when my lips speak right
                things -Prov. 23:16).

I am He [God] which searcheth the reins [kidneys] and hearts -Rev. 2:23).

Funny how the moment you started quoting scripture the quack-doctor dissapeared.

I was especially amused to see her unable to understand how seeing a girl's hair blowing in the wind could lead to sin. Obviously her patients are not teenage boys.
