thousands of years ago when religion first developed it was forward thinkers using there Knowledge of their surroundings to improve their and others lives. But methods of modern science and observation are the natural progression for man, sure they can be used for destructive purposes but so can religion and has been for the last 4000 years.

There is a huge differance between science and religion; science can't tell you when it is the right thing to rape and murder a village full of people. Only God can do that. As we have discussed before; with out God the conquest of Canaanites is just the same as the Holocaust. Only threw God do we know the Canaanites were scum who pre-stole the Jews land and deserved to die.

Extremest religion and hate groups have no place in the modern world.

Life just IS.

Life IS rewarded not on merit but on chance. Good people have bad things happen to them while good things happen to bad people.

Of course not, nature has hard wired all us animals to survive and reproduce. For us self aware animals that may be hard to accept but it does not mean its less true.

So just enjoy the ride.

No, but I've heard of the Epicurean Paradox, which is what you've listed.

The problem with it, is that it's an oversimplification: it assumes there is only one morality, applicable in all situations, to all participants, whether human or divine.

One example I use to illustrate the difficulties in assuming that one morality fits all situations and can clearly label actions as good or evil is the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Everyone involved knew that the war would soon be over. Dropping the bombs would mean the deaths of several hundred thousand people, but might convince the Japanese to surrender. Not dropping the bombs would mean a slow, dangerous invasion, island by island, street by street, house by house, and MILLIONS of casualties on both sides.

If one can understand the view that an action that results in the deaths of several hundred thousand is "good", one may start to appreciate the potholes and IEDs that lie in the path of an honest ethicist.
