Well there is something called Theory of Mind, which is developed in children as they grow up, enabling them (and therefore us) to make sense of the world: what I think; what you think; my knowledge of what you think; whether you know that I'm aware of what you think, and so on.

Usually by the age of about 4 a child understands that although "I like liquorice" - "that doesn't mean you do" and so a theory of mind is originated by each child (it is not something that is taught).

Understanding what another person thinks, appreciating that that is not the same as one's own thoughts, is fully developed in adults.
