Exodus 10-12
Today we get:
Exodus 10
1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:
The ONLY reason that the children of Israel haven't been able to leave yet is because God wanted to show HIS signs, to show how great He is.
PRAISE JESUS!!!
#8. Locusts
12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.
If you remember the last plague, (hail and fire) it destroyed most of the crops, the Locust ate the rest.
Prior to the beginning of this plague, Pharaoh had decided to let the men of Israel leave. Moses said that wasn't good enough, they were to take the men, women, children and all their livestock.
Now, the locusts swarms were a plague and a miracle of the Lord. It wasn't because their natural predator the frog was destroyed, it wasn't just that it seemed like there was more locusts eating the rest of what was left of the crops, it was because there were a whole lotta locusts!
#9. Darkness
21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
Once again, this was not because there was a powerful volcano eruption!
Exodus 11
FINALLY
#10. Death of the firstborn.
5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
PRAISE JESUS!!!
Exodus 12
God explains to Moses how to not be killed.
Step 1, take a lamb, kill it, and put the blood on the door posts.
Step 2, eat the lamb, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
Step 3. eat it all night, if there's anything leftover burn it.
11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD's passover.
Thus we have the passover feast.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
AND I KICK ASS!!!
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
So the children of Israel did it.
29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
PRAISE JESUS!!!
Pharaoh IMMEDIATELY tells Moses to leave.
36 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.
They borrowed more than they needed, but they didn't take any leavened bread, for some reason, when the children of Israel were leaving Egypt, God didn't like yeast.
37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
Yowza, that's a lot of Jews!
40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.
In 430 years, the 70 (Genesis 46:27) members of the Israel clan, blossomed to about 600,000.
How is that possible?
If you take 70 * 4 (going under the impression that each person had 4 children, which isn't too hard to do)
Then the numbers go; 280 (second generation) 1120 (third generation) 4480 (fourth generation) 17,920 (fifth generation) 71,,680 (sixth generation) 286,720 (seventh generation) 1,146880 (eight generation). The final number is well above the 600k number. And given 430 years, to produce 8 generations, that's only 56 years per generation. So to go from 70 to 600,000 is not really that difficult.
(Since 1776, the United States population has gone from an estimated 2.5 million to over 302 million and that's just over 200 years.)
51 And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
Praise Jesus!!!
Thus ends today, and what have we learned.
1. The rest of the plagues.
2. The rough population of the tribes of Israel. (at nearly 50,000 per tribe).
3. Pharaoh wanted to (on several occasions) let the people go, but God decided he wanted to show off, so he hardened Pharaoh's heart.
