Job 4-6
In today's Bible in a Year reading we get:
Job 4
Remember, Job just got done wishing he was never born. He never blamed God for his affliction, but then he didn't take fault for it either. Eliphaz the Temanite is the first one to talk to him. Remember a Temanite is either of the offspring of Teman (a grandson of Esau) or someone from Teman, which is a place in Southern Idumea (Edom).
2 If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
Assay means attempt. His friend was asking permission to talk, but he was going to anyway as evidenced from his last part of the statement. Basically he said "Can I be honest with you?" which very rarely has a kind word following it. Yes Job, your butt looks big in that dress.
3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Nice of Eliphaz to sugarcoat the bitter pill.
4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
BUT... there's always a but isn't there?
5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
Yep, there's the but.
Eliphaz said, Job, you are a great help when things are going great, but now, you are worthless and weak. Isn't that exactly what Satan wanted to happen? (Except Job hadn't cursed the LORD yet).
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Eliphaz is trying to get Job to admit to some wrong doing.
17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
Eliphaz can't comprehend that a guy could have all these bad things happen to him, without having earned it in some way.
Job 5
1 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?
For Eliphaz's belief system to be correct, it REQUIRES that Job have done some horrible thing to earn it.
6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
Bad things don't just attach themselves to anyone. There has got to be a reason.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
Eliphaz needs for Job to be bad.
27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
Come on Job, Confess, you did something... what... what did you do... if you confess the LORD will forgive you... come on...
Job 6
1 But Job answered and said,
Shaddup, I didn't do nuttin!
2 Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
Wouldn't it be great if this suffering was caused by some sin? What do you think Job was doing for those 7 days without talking, he was searching, trying to find some sin that he hadn't confessed, something that he did that he didn't perform a sacrifice for, he couldn't come up with anything.
8 Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
He can't understand it either, and just wants to die.
10 Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Job has confessed and not held any secret sin. So why doesn't God kill him. I wonder when Job found out about the sons of God meeting and about Satan's part in the dialog?
14 To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.
Job said his good buddy Eliphaz should stop accusing him of being a sinner and maybe offer some better help in fixing the affliction.
19 The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
Who are these people from Tema? Tema is about 250 miles south east of Edom, somewhat inbetween where they were and where the Sabeans (Sheba) people were.
Finally Job couldn't take anymore of Eliphaz's accusations.
25 How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
Nothing... your words are nothing.
27 Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Wasn't Job just begging for the LORD to kill him, and then he accuses his buddy of trying to do the same?
After he kept harping on his false accusations, he probably started to be less of a friend.
28 Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
If Eliphaz couldn't recognize him, is he really going to be able to tell if Job is not telling the truth?
Isn't just how it always goes. One person says "Can I be honest" and then goes and insults the other. The other gets somewhat defensive, and starts to get really angry at the first, and then they have a full argument.
So what have we learned today?
1. Like your mom taught you, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all... except then we wouldn't have Job 4 and 5.
2. Job didn't like having his friend accuse him of sin, even though the wages of sin is death. Job and Eliphaz just didn't know that God liked to play games with people, yet.
3. First Job begs God to kill him, then when he thinks Eliphaz is trying to, he gets all angry at him.
