Proverbs 1-3
Proverbs is the book of Wisdom. It's mostly considered to be the Wisdom of King Solomon, the son of David, through David's relationship with Bathsheba.
Remember in 1 Kings 3:9 Solomon asked the LORD for understanding. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Because he didn't ask for riches, God responded like this
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
So Solomon became the wisest man ever.
Additionally, he had 700 wives and 300 concubines. He then lost control of them and they started following other gods. Then, the wise Solomon built temples for those gods to make his hundreds of bitchy wives and concubines shut up and give him peace for a second...
Proverbs 1
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
Remember, Solomon is wise.
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
It's good of Proverbs to give a mission statement for it's purpose. Why was this book written? To give wisdom and instruction. Praise Jesus.
This book is basically a knowledge how-to manual. It was probably written for Solomon to teach his children how to be good. Since the men in the family would be out working a real job, the proverbs are normally told by the mother. Remember, raising children is women's work. So the proverbs would be taught by the mother to the son. At some point, the mother would have to teach them to the daughter, so that she could later teach them to her sons.
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
The first proverb, isn't necessarily the first ACTUAL proverb. This is more like a little statement, than an actual proverb. Even though it's a valuable statement.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
This is the first proverb. A fool here isn't a jokester, or a comedian, the fool in proverbs is a person who refuses to learn. A fool has the capability to learn, but refuses.
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
To the uneducated, sin may seem like more fun, but ultimately, it really sucks.
20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
Here we see wisdom is a woman. I wonder, was she one of the 1000 women that Solomon married?
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Reproof is instruction. Simply, it's instruction. It's a bit more than just simple instruction. It's more of a correction, than instruction. In order to be reproofed, one must first make a mistake that requires correction. A synonym is rebuke. Most people associate being yelled at with rebuke, rebuke and reprove are both being yelled at for making mistakes.
"Turn you at my reproof"; think of a person who when being offered correction, refuses it, and sticks with their stubborn ways. You make a mistake on your report at work, and your boss calls you into his office and bitches at you for about 15 mintues... the next time you have to do the report you make the same mistake, because you didn't listen to your boss, that's "turn you at my reproof".
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
Then your boss laughs as he fires you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
You ask for your job back, but because you didn't listen to your boss before, he refuses to hire you back.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
Have fun on food stamps.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
But if you listen to me when I make corrections, you'll keep your job.
Proverbs 2
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
Proverbs requests that people seek wisdom in the same way that they would search for the LORD.
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
Wisdom isn't out there for everyone to see. Wisdom is like a hidden pearl, nestled in the protective mouth of the clam. Like a man in a boat.
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
Wisdom will preserve you, and keep you on the path of the upright. It will keep you from the way of evil people.
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
Odd that they would use the term strange woman.
1 Kings 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites:
Solomon, the wisest man, who wrote the proverbs, and loved many strange women, writes in Proverbs 2:16 that Wisdom will deliver thee from the strange woman. Apparently, he doesn't necessarily follow his own advice.
19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
Oh, I get it... this strange woman, isn't ACTUALLY a strange woman, since Wisdom is a woman (at least so far, it's been a woman) being a fool and refusing wisdom is like going to a strange woman.
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
People who are fools will be forced out. Praise JESUS!!!
Proverbs 3
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
How often do you see people with a Jesus fish on their car, getting pulled over by the cops for speeding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
God will direct their paths, God will not make someone speed.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
When God corrects you, you should say "Thank you LORD, because of this, I'll be a better person".
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Think of the LORDs correction like this. Murder in the ghetto. If a negro in a gang kills another negro in a gang, the cops don't work very hard to solve the crime. It's just another darkie murder. The cops don't really care, it's just another negro gang banger thats dead. When a white person gets killed, it's all over the news, and the cops work to find the killer. The white person is like the son who the LORD delighteth, the black is not.
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
Remember, wisdom is like fine jewels.
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
When someone is deserving of reward, give it to them.
28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
When your neighbour asks to borrow your weed eater, let him use it.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
Do not get into a fight for no reason.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
The wise will get good, the fool will not.
So what have we learned today?
1. Wisdom is a woman, she's hard to find, she's a jewel, a pearl like the man in a boat in a Georgia O'keefe painting.
2. Wise people will let their neighbour use their lawnmower.
3. A person who is corrected is loved, a person who is not corrected is thought of indifferently.
