  • Day 239. Jeremiah 49-52

    Jeremiah 49-52

    Jeremiah 49

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

The Ammonites were the descendants of one of the children of Lot.

2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.

Rabbah was the main city in Ammon.

6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.

There isn't much listed about the Ammonites in many other sources than the Bible. They are listed in some Assyrian texts, and a very small amount in Persian and Greek texts. There is no timeline listed for when they disappeared. Justin Martyr wrote about them in Dialogue with Trypho around 119 AD. They were still a people but weren't a country anymore.

7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

Edom is the country that descended from Esau. Edom ceased during the Jewish -Roman wars.

10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.

Esau/Edom is going to be destroyed.

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

The swelling of the Jordan is a metaphor for the coming conquering armies of the Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Persians (although the Persians weren't known yet).

34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

Elam was located in the far southwest of Iran. Their destruction came in roughly 539.

36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

Jeremiah 49 is a very genocidal chapter. There are four, once almost great countries that are listed that aren't around anymore. Nor are there any people who claim to be them.

    Jeremiah 50

1 The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.

This was probably one of the most astonishing chapters written by Jeremiah. It is considered to have been written around 595. It was 10 years after the initial invasion of Judah by the Babylonians. Babylon was the preeminent world power at the time. They could beat the Egyptians, they could beat the Assyrians, and they could beat those 4 countries in Jeremiah 49. Just because you believe every word that the LORD tells you, doesn't mean it has to make sense. It'd be like someone in 1750 saying that England would be defeated by those colonists in the new world. It makes no sense.

2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.

When Nebuchadnezzar let Jeremiah go, he probably didn't know about this chapter. Nebuchadnezzar trusted the rest of Jeremiah's writing, especially the parts where he mentioned that Babylon would win; so he must not have been aware that Jeremiah also prophesied the end of Babylon.

3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.

It seems everyone comes from the north.

19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.

That's some good reassuring words. Israel will return.

26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.

    utterly destroyed.

46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.

When the world super power was beaten, it shook the world.

    Jeremiah 51

    1 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;

More prophecy against Bablyon. In fact, this chapter is 64 verses of it.

8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

US forces have occupied the site for some time and have caused damage to the archaeological record. In a report of the British Museum's Near East department, Dr. John Curtis describes how parts of the archaeological site were levelled to create a landing area for helicopters, and parking lots for heavy vehicles. Curtis wrote that the occupation forces

"caused substantial damage to the [replica of the] Ishtar Gate, one of the most famous monuments from antiquity [...] US military vehicles crushed 2,600-year-old brick pavements, archaeological fragments were scattered across the site, more than 12 trenches were driven into ancient deposits and military earth-moving projects contaminated the site for future generations of scientists [...] Add to all that the damage caused to nine of the moulded brick figures of dragons in the Ishtar Gate by soldiers trying to remove the bricks from the wall."

Even still, archeologists are howling for Babylon.

9 We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

Saddam attempted to heal Babylon in 1983, but he then invaded Kuwait, which caused so much of the world's problems today.

28 Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.

Alright, we've got a glimpse of where Babylon's destroyer will come from. Medes, the Median empire lasted about 625 (although they did have a king in 728), and lasted until about 550. Cyrus is not considered to have been a Median, he was a Achaemenid or Persian.

37 And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.

Saddam tried to build a palace there, but it never got fully completed.

60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.

    It wasn't a happy book.

Jeremiah gave the book to Seraiah, who accompanied Zedekiah to Babylon on a trip to pay tribute. This book was given at the same time as the letter in Chapter 30. Chapter 30 was for the exiles, chapter 51 is for Babylon.

Seraiah was to present this book to Babylon, then tie it to a rock and throw it in the Euphrates.

    Jeremiah 52

Jeremiah 52 is a history book of all the things that happened so far. It is believed to have been written in 588.

First section, Zedekiah was king, he did evil.

Nebuchadnezzar came a besieged the city. People died, they tried to run away.

10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah.

Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and took him to Babylon.

    Then Nebuzaradan burned the temple.

24 And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:

Damn, this after Seraiah threw the book into Euphrates, he was probably thinking that book had lied.

31 And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison.

    Were Jehoaichin and Zedekiah cellmates?

    Thus ends Jeremiah.

    So what have we learned?

    1. God's going to destroy a bunch of smaller countries.

    2. God's going to destroy Babylon.

    3. Seriously

    4. Zedekiah did evil; he was taken away with everyone else; Jerusalem was torn down; Jehoaiachin lived happily ever after.
