Johny Joe Hold, candidate for Mayor in Freehold, today announced that, if elected, he will propose a new Ten Commandments Monument. He believes he has a strategy to circumvent restrictions on religious statements on public property. At a news conference on the lawn of the Freehold City Hall, Hold spoke at length about his frustration with Federal laws against Ten Commandment displays.
"I am so angry," Hold said. "A couple of days ago, the liberal U. S. Supreme Court allowed a sacred display of the Ten Commandments on public property in Oklahoma to be moved. The Godless people won. This must stop."
Hold went on to explain the monument he wants to place on public property if elected Mayor of Freehold. "What we need here in Godly Freehold is a Ten Commandments Monument so big it cannot be moved. If it is too big to move, and, too expensive to tear down, the ACLU can sue until the cows come home and it will just sit there," Hold said.
Hold said he is consulting with engineers to find a location on the City Hall property that will support the weight of the massive structure he is planning.
Local ACLU President, Sarah Meyir, said her group was stunned by the annoucement. "We were making progress against these religious monuments," she said. "This is an entirely new strategy. It looks like trouble for us.
Other candidates for Freehold Mayor could not be reached for comment. The election in Freehold is March 17.
