  • Day 54. Deuteronomy 10-12

    Deuteronomy 10-12

In today's Bible in a Year, we continue with Moses second sermon, directly prior to the Joos going into the Promised Land. Again, today is a rehashing of previous events.

    Today we get:
    • Retelling of the getting of the ten commandments
    • Commandments to keep the commandments
    • Warning not to follow other gods
    • A Blessing and a curse
    • Again, being told to destroy idols

    Deuteronomy 10

Moses recounts when he had to go up and remake the ten commandments; after he broke the first set. He also talks about how he had the ark made.

5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.

For being very meek, he sure uses the word I alot.

6 And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.

He didn't mention the death of his sister though.

8 At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.

I still think it was mighty nice of Moses and the LORD to choose Moses kin to be the people to minister. It was especially nice of him to set up his brothers direct descendants to be the high priest... for all time.

12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

13 To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

    What does God require?

    1. FEAR the LORD!
    2. Walk in his ways!
    3. Love him!
    4. Serve him!
    5. Keep his commandments!

Lets review. Fear, Walk, Love, Serve, Keep. FWLSK. Do you FWLSK the LORD? Or do you think He'll forgive you if you don't FWLSK?

16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

Circumcision of the heart will cure a sore neck.

I'm not sure if it will help if you slept wrong though.

17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

18 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.

God loves orphans and widows, and if you mess with them, He will punish you something fierce.

20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.

Remember the F... of FWLSK, Moses was a big fan of the F.

    Deuteronomy 11

1 Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

The L of FWLSK. How do you show you love Him? You K(eep) his commandments. James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. How many preachers today will tell you, that you can do whatever you want, and God will love you? Friend, if you TRULY love God, you will K(eep) his commandments. It's not hard. You just do it.

Moses then reminds the people of some of the things God has done, probably to instill the F(ear) that he talked about earlier.

Moses tells the people that if they follow God, He'll make life easy for them. And that they are to remember it was Him who did it, and not some false god.

    16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

If they follow God, He'll make them great.

25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.

    And now the blessing/curse.

27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:

28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

    Deuteronomy 12

1 These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.

As much as Moses has been harping on destroying idols and the like, I wonder what he'll tell them to do?

2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:

3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.

    Oh, that again.

Moses later warns them not to eat blood.

16 Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.

23 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.

Moses reminds them to feed the Levites.
19 Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth.

30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

Again with the idols... But I guess as much as Moses has seen in all those years with the Hebe's he's pretty sure that they need reminding of it.

32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

    Moses... the great (meek) lawgiver!

So what have we learned today.

    1. Don't allow the idols to stand.
    2. Don't eat blood.
    3. FWLSK Fear, Walk, Love, Serve Keep.
