Default Day 268. Amos 7-9 - 01-28-2011, 05:46 PM

Amos 7-9

Amos 7

1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.

Remember, Joel also talked about a plague of locust. Locust are just swarms of grasshoppers.

7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

think of the plumbline as a ball on a string. When you hold it, it will be vertical. The wall that God was on was perfectly straight, it was "plumb". God said he's going to measure the people. He's not going to judge, that requires a bit of personal bias, he's going to measure.

When I was a youth going to school, I didn't like taking English classes that required essays, I liked taking math tests. English classes, to me, always seemed like the teachers preferences came into play. If a teacher liked a student, he would instantly give that child an A. If he didn't like someone, or expected them to write a worse paper, he would review (judge) it more thoroughly. With a math test, it's either right or it's wrong. 2+2=4 is correct, 2+2=5 is not correct. There is no bias, no personal preference. It either is the right answer or it's the wrong answer. One time, the english bias was tested at my school. Two students at different times of the year turned in the same book report. The student that was expected to do well received an A on the report. The student that was average received a C without the teachers knowledge. So, to remove any bias, God is going to not make it up to him, he's putting the standard out there, he's using a measuring stick. Either you pass or you don't, if you fail, it's not because he didn't like you.

In the winter olympics, there are sports that are speculative and sports that are absolute. In speed skating, if you are faster than the other guy, you win; that's absolute. In figure skating, if the judge doesn't like your outfit or your choice of music you can be docked points or they may not think that you performed as well, that's speculative. One sport that is speculative but shouldn't be is ski jumping. There are style points in ski jumping. Not the flippy kind where you get more points for a triple than a double, I'm talking about ski jumping, the thing where you go down the ramp and see how far you can go. There is no need whatsoever for ski jumping to have judges. It only needs a tape measure. When God measures you with his plumbline, it's not speculative, it's absolute. You either did jump further or you didn't. It doesn't matter how pretty you were when you flew through the air.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

This is not the Amaziah who was king of Judah, this guy was a priest of the golden calves at Bethel.

Remember earlier how people go and complain to authorities when someone goes and preaches that the things people are doing are wrong? Amaziah did exactly that. He didn't like that there were protesters in front of his false temple (or at his gay bar), so he went and complained to the king (or filed a lawsuit making it so that no one can protest at military funerals).

11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.

Amaziah said to Amos, "look, this is AMERICA, LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!"

Amos said he didn't WANT to be a prophet, God Chose him!

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

When God calls you, are you going to answer, or are you going to complain that it's not politically correct to tell people that they are sinning.

Amos 8

2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.

What is the significance of "summer fruit". This verse is actually a pun (if you spoke or could read Hebrew. The Hebrew word for summer is kayts, the word for end is kets. They would be spelled mostly the same. So god said that the summer is ending. Kayts is kets. When Amos told the people this, they wouldn't help but have to think that their ending was coming, just as the summer was coming.

3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

Now, everytime they saw summer fruits, they would have to think of dead bodies.

Amos then complains about people using unjust balances.

5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

It's easy to make a fake weight. Just hollow out your ephah (unit of weight). Remember in chapter 7, God was going to use a plumbline, you can't fake a plumbline, you can fake scales, but you can't fake a weight on a string. Anyone can make a plumbline that is true.

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

There's going to be a drought, and it's going to be God not watering his people.

Amos 9

4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

God's going to do the killing. Even though it's the Babylonians, they are just doing his will.

5 And the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

It's no one else, it's God that's doing this.

8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

He's going to pretty much wipe it away, but not fully.

9 For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

He's going to take his people and spread them out. Like flour through a sifter.

14 And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

Has that time happened yet? Don't know, the people sure are trying to be moved out by the Palestinians.

So what have we learned today?

1. God's plumbline is absolute.

2. When the summer ends, it's not going to end well.

3. God will eventually replant Jacob in Israel.
