Why do atheists refuse to acknowledge God? How can they ignore all the evidence for His existence? Because they are weak. Reality is too much for them to cope with.
If atheists acknowledged God’s existence, they would have to face the fact that they and their families and friends are sinners (Rom 3:23) damned to an eternity in hell (Mk 9:43-48), possibly without hope of salvation (Mat 12:31; 1 Jn 5:16; Rom 9:10-24). They would have to face the fact that all the suffering in the world is just punishment for the sin of two people who lived 6,000 years ago (Rom 5:12). They would have to acknowledge that there is an all-powerful God (Rev 19:6) who created evil (Is 45:7) and hates most people. And if they were saved, they would have to stop sinning (1 Cor 15:34), give up their family (Lk 14:26) and all worldly pleasures (Lk 14:33), endure trials (Acts 14:22) and persecution (Jn 16:2-4), be willing to lay down their lives (Lk 12:4-5), and serve (Deut 13:4) and praise God for eternity (Ps 145:1). Christianity isn’t for pussies.
But the fact is atheists don’t acknowledge God’s existence even in the face of overwhelming evidence in Creation (Rom 1:18-32). This is because they employ defense mechanisms to protect their fragile minds from the truth. Maladaptive coping mechanisms are a sign of immaturity.
Denial: Normal people may deny reality if they are grieving or facing death. But atheists deny the reality of God’s existence with intensity and persistence, as though they can make God disappear through willpower, or by pretending He isn’t real.
Repression: This involves forcing painful truths into the subconscious. Atheists do this unconsciously. They are not aware of it, so they can’t deny they are doing it.
Suppression: This involves consciously forcing truth from the conscious mind, refusing to think about it. Atheists do this every time they look at nature (Rom 1:18).
Displacement: This involves transferring feelings, such as anger, from a deserving object to an undeserving one. Many atheists deny God with their mouths because inwardly they are angry with Him for meting on them the suffering and punishment they justly deserve. Or they blame Christians in general for mistreatment they may have suffered in the church and use it as an excuse to deny God.
Rationalization: Atheists are masters of this defense mechanism. It is the reliance on seemingly logical, but ultimately spurious, reasoning to negate reality. They specialize in pedantic language and creative arguments as to why they cannot accept the existence of God. They think they are intellectually superior and therefore must be correct when in fact they aren’t coping with reality.
My challenge to atheists: Man up and acknowledge the truth!
