It is very evident that God was very displeased when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Humanity would have had it made living the easy life in the Garden . We would all be laying around unashamedly naked, eating the easy bounty provided by God.
But Alas, it wasn't to be. Now all the sorrow of the world; poverty, diseases, famine, Godsent disasters, all of it can be traced back to one huge screw-up. God has a very long memory and is not the easy, forgiving type of deity.
Below are the relevant verses from Genesis 3:16 - 3:24
16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
20And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
What lessons can we learn from these Holy Scriptures?
How can these lessons be applied to our lives today?
I recall an incident from back in 1977. My sons were aged 7 and 5 when my wife baked up a big batch of chocolate chip cookies. My wife told the boys "You're welcome to eat the cookies on this tray, but those in the container are for you father's Christmas party where he works tomorrow, so leave them alone".
The next morning as I was preparing to leave for work I noticed the tupperware container for the cookies was very light. When I checked inside, found only crumbs. I asked my sons why they had eaten the cookies after they had been told not to. They blamed each other, then said the devil made them do it. I immediately moved the boys from their rooms to the outside shed where they lived until they moved out on their own.
Just the other day while visiting my older son's family, I let the air out of my grandson's bicycle tires. My grandson asked why I did something like that so I told him the cookie story. Like God, I too have a long memory and will continue to make them all pay til the day I die ... or longer if I put some money in a trust fund to harass my progeny for many generations to come.
