Well, the problem as it stands today is that most methods of physics break down at the singularity, a point shortly after the Big Bang, which is something evidenced as factual by the expansion of the Universe which has been distilled into the function of Hubble's law. Age of the objects can also be inferred by redshift, which enables us to place the most distant quasars in the order of billions of light years in distance.
Though, I assume that you're asking about how the Big Bang event occurred in the first place. This is somewhat of a more difficult question to answer, since you'd have to use some theoretical physics models to go past that point. M Theory would provide an answer, suggesting that branes (which are essentially the same as the initial conception of strings, but with an added dimension), provide the means for fundamental forces and matter to come into effect in our percieved 4-D universe through the interaction of these branes in 11 dimensional space.
