Down and up are constructs we use to help us deal with the world. In the universe, there is no set down or up.

And yes; we are pulled in every conceivable direction at once; but all of those forces pulling on us are vectors, and vectors add up. We will be pulled in whatever direction the strongest pull is; namely, the center of the Earth.

Not any circle, but the circle of traveling only East or only West, as the claim early in this thread was that the South Pole circled the world. If one tried to only head East or only West, the person would run into the South pole, meaning that it would be impossible to complete the journey. However, this does not happen as the Earth is a sphere.
