But.. I have to say that the sun will be a bit further away then you might think. I will use Mr.Osborne's example of a coal fire. A fire with only one coal is very weak and will not produce a lot of heat, you can sit mere inches from it without feeling uncomfortable. A coal fire as described by Mr.Osborne will contain a lot more coal and so he had to sit further away to feel at ease. Now hear me out.

If the sun is indeed made of coal, it has to be an awful lot of it. Thus can we calculate by the amount of coal to how far we are sitting on our comfy world. Which, judging by the scales, will be a lot more than 500 miles.

I'm just thinking out loud here.

Very well. If one coal would keep you 10 centimeters away. And a fire of 10 Coals keeps you 1 meter away, we can calculate. 500 miles is rougly 804.672 Km (we use meters here, sorry). So far so good.
804.672 Km = 804,672 meters. That would mean the sun contains 8,046,720 Coals as we know them. You could put that amount of coals together in one place on our planet. Now think to yourself, a silo with roughly 8 milion coals, would that equal the sun? We are talking about the sun here, the thing made to keep the entirety of earth warm. I think that 8 milion will not even come close, thus proving that it has to be more than 500 miles.

You forgot about the law of inverse squares. The amount of energy doesn't decrease linearly with the distance, it decreases by the square of the change in distance. So if the sun were twice as far away, it would feel four times cooler, and if the sun were three times as far away, it would feel nine times cooler.

Inverse squares law has nothing to do with air resistance. It's all about radiation. Look it up.

And you forgot about Boyle's Law, which states that a gas in a closed system expand to fill whatever container it is in. Since the earth, sun, moon, and stars are all encased in a solid dome-like structure called "the firmament", Boyle's law tells us that our atmosphere expands to the top of the firmament, so the heat from the sun passes through air along its whole trip to the ground.

Besides, that's only common sense that the sun is in our atmosphere. How do you think a coal fire can burn without oxygen, dummy?

Edited to add: Anyway, we calculated the sun's diameter to be roughly 12 miles, so that's a lot more than a silo. If it were just a silo of coal, you wouldn't even be able to see it from 500 miles away, would you? The sun is much bigger than you think it is.

Edited again to add: I have a word problem for you. Burning lignite coal gives off 15 Megajoules/kilogram, and burning anthracite coal gives off 27 MJ/kg. How many Megajoules would we get from a 12 mile diameter lignite coal fire and how many from a 12 mile diameter anthracite coal fire?

If light goes in straight lines then light from a very distant Sun would be coming towards us in parallel lines, it would appear as straight vertical columns coming down from the clouds.

Have you ever tried the double slit experiment? If not I highly recommend it, helps you learn a lot about how light travels.
