Dear Friend,
Per True Christianity™, the slightest deviation from a fairly comprehensive code of conduct can result in eternal damnation. That is, we believe God holds us responsible for EVERYTHING we do, no matter what the extenuating circumstances. Hence, we must hold ourselves and each other responsible for EVERYTHING we do.
By contrast, the scientific view of the world places the blame for bad behavior on bad brain chemicals and poor cultural modeling or perverse social or economic incentives. "To understand all," say the godless French, "is to forgive all." In this paradigm, personal responsibility has only an instrumental, not a normative value -- per the scientific mindset, we hold people responsible for what they do in the hopes of changing their behavior, not to punish them for misues of a moral agency we now believe to be illusory. Bad behavior is a social, not an individual, failure.
So, really, True Christians™ keep all responsibility for their behavior on their own shoulders, while the scientific mindset displaces blame entirely. Doesn't that make the scientists the cowards?
Amen to That!
