Primer on the drug-crazed rantings of Terence McKenna

Terence McKenna was an American writer who believed aliens were communicating with him via altered states that he achieved by taking heroic doses of drugs. He predicted there would be a "transition of consciousness" in 2012.

Instead he died of a brain tumor. Among his more sane ideas were that magical elves jumped into his chest and made him create things out of words, via telepathy, while on drugs.

On the crazier end of the spectrum, McKenna believed that the universal mind is alive, is sentient, is perceiving, is there to meet you when you come through from the other side. So, talking about psychedelics not as a spotlight to be turned on to reveal the detritus of your own personal unconscious. But a spotlight shining ahead of you. It is actually that the same organizational principles which called us forth into self-reflection has called forth self-reflection out of the planet itself. And the problem is for us to suspect this, act on our suspicion, and be good detectives and track down the spirit in its lair. And this is what shamans are doing. They are hunters of spirit.

As I said, McKenna took drugs and died with nothing to show for it. Don't do drugs.
If I have seen further, it is by standing on the heads of others.

Who? I thought he was a Limey kickball player who saw lizard people.

That's why we need a primer, Brother Des. Praise Jesus!

Brother Des, I think you're confusing him with third-rate goalstopper David Icke (a bit like Uri Geller but with reptiles) who, rather surprisingly, isn't dead yet.

Why oh why does anyone think intoxication offers a pathway to reality?

Surely the whole point is a departure from, at least temporarily, and not even because there's anything wrong with it since going on a toadstool jaunt to central Asia costs money. Quite a lot, I'd have thought, given the business ethics of tour operators and the reasons for travel by their clients. So they're doing pretty well and can take time off and fly in aircraft for crackpot holidays which if described as "an opportunity for enlightenment" are bound to have an eight stuck in front of whatever's on the price list. And once they start hallucinating machine elves the sky's the limit.

          Jesus is not an elf.

It's despicable. I have seen no evidence that Mr. McKenna ever delivered Bibles to the savages, in fact the opposite. He came back filled with nonsensical ideas and recipes for making drugs even more potent than the crack cocaine. I think he should be held responsible for the opioid endemic more than anybody.

And what hippie has not slurped up marihuana "tea" then foomfed out on the LSD, gone AWOL on "e" eventually getting the ginger to shriek out from its orgy

Satan! Satan is not adored by savages! Savages align their inner selves with totems (a leopard, say) or dwell on the form of their fetish (such as e3-headed chocolate concubines) and when we prance about it's not St Vitus' Dance or convulsions or an epileptic fit

But this Mckenna knew better. Inundated with chocolate or vanilla or violet concubines, one would presume,
