Now, THIS just takes the cake. Even PETA can't resist trying to corrupt Jesus with their vile message of perversion!
At least this story has a happy ending! (No, this is very different from the "happy ending" offered at truck stop massage parlors nationwide.)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals offered to rebuild the lightning-struck “Touchdown Jesus” statue earlier this week . . . making an offer showing no understanding of the Solid Rock Church’s culture.
In 2004, the Solid Rock Church of Monroe, Ohio built a 62-foot steel-and-fiberglass depiction of Jesus’ torso emerging from (drowning in?) a pond at a cost of $250,000. The statue, commonly referred to as “Touchdown Jesus”, was struck by lightning last week and incinerated, causing $700,000 in damages to the statue and nearby amphitheater. Donations from Christians and offers from artists poured in from around the country. Among those offers was one from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an animal-rights organization which urges everyone to “go vegan”, or cease use of all animal-based products.
That looks more like a monkey on his shoulder to me.
Their letter to pastors Lawrence and Darlene Bishop, available HERE, suggested that PETA replace the half-torso statue with a cemetery-style monument featuring a sculpture of Jesus carrying a lamb, standing atop a pillar reading, “Blessed are the merciful. Go vegan.”
Said PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich in his letter:
The Bishops weren’t sure what to make of the offer.
Pastor Lawrence Bishop said he wouldn’t have expected such an offer from PETA. “It’s kind of amusing to me,” he commented, adding that he didn’t think he’d contact PETA to respond.
Wife and co-Pastor Darlene Bishop was more direct. ”We’re not interested. We raise cattle. We’d never build a statue with stipulations that we would have to advertise for PETA,” she said. (Emphasis added.)
That’s right, the Bishops are cattle ranchers. Friedrich’s letter was not merely off the mark, it was a direct insult to the Bishops and their way of life . . . one of which they likely believe Jesus would approve.

An ever-growing number of Christians believe that eating the flesh of God’s creatures supports the unholy cruelty of today’s filthy factory farms and slaughterhouses. I think everyone would agree that Jesus would be horrified by the cruelty that we inflict today on animals simply to satisfy our addiction to the taste of their flesh and milk, especially when so many healthful vegan options are readily available. In the industrialized meat and dairy industries, chickens and
turkeys have their throats cut while they’re still conscious, piglets have their tails and testicles cut off without being given any painkillers, fish are suffocated or cut open while they’re still alive on the decks of fishing boats, and calves are taken away from their loving mothers within hours of birth. Surely you would agree that such abuse contradicts God’s call to mercy and stewardship.
