On this day in history, June 27, 1844, the false prophet Joseph Smith was killed in the jail in Nauvoo, Illinois.
Some of the details that the current day Mormons (later Day Saints) and their virtual myriad of spin-off religions, sects, and cults, conveniently forget to mention are:
* the jail staff joined the 'mob'
this is an interesting detail since the jailers would have been either Mormon, or Mormon approved. Recall Joseph Smith was the mayor, and had voluntarily surrendered himself to their facility.
* Joseph Smith was armed
Joseph Smith had a firearm, smuggled in to him in the jail. He was able to shoot at least 3 members of the 'mob' as they entered his cell. Curiously, Joseph Smith is invariably described as a martyr. How many 'martyrs' pack heat and attempt to shoot their way out of their impending 'martyrdom' ?
* Joseph Smith's outrageous polygamy had just been revealed to the public
The LDS church controlled the only newspaper in town (along with the town government and most businesses). A rival newspaper was established, and in the first issue, accurately reported Joseph Smith's polygamy. Enraged, Smith ordered the destruction of the printing press of this rival newspaper.
What these 3 points taken together strongly implies if not confirms, was that Joseph Smith was killed by a mob almost entirely composed of Mormons, or folks that had been affiliated with the Mormons at one time. Joseph Smith is clearly not a martyr, his discharge of a firearm permanently soils his hands, and his murder was simply a result of the power struggle within his own organization for control and the resulting chaos of the revelation of his outrageously promiscuous polygamous lifestyle. Non-Mormons have nothing to apologize for in the matter of Joseph Smith's death, his death was entirely his own fault. His own followers (and those disaffected with his false religion by that time) are the ones who killed him.
Not that there was anything wrong with that, other than perhaps it was a decade or two too late.
The vile Joseph Smith, currently burning continuously in HELL for 166 years, PRAISE JESUS:
