Teen Boot Camps close, Landover Opportunity?

It seems that some boot camps designed to treat way ward teens have closed. This is an obvious LIEberal slant on the subject and it's not clear if these camps were operated by Christians, but their methods do seem to be Biblical in nature. Perhaps the void created by these closings can be filled by Landover?

    Economy Killing Abusive Teen Programs

    — By Maia Szalavitz | Fri January 30, 2009 2:03 PM PST

There is a silver lining to this bleak economy: Abusive and ineffective "tough love" programs for teens are failing right and left.

In just the last few weeks, the notorious Tranquility Bay program in Jamaica, Spring Creek Lodge in Montana, and Pathway Family Center in Detroit and Ohio have all been shuttered.

Tranquility Bay was known for making kids kneel on concrete for days, using "restraint" so harsh that it broke bones. Both Tranquility Bay and Spring Creek Lodge were part of a network called the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASP or WWASPS)—and the group's philosophy involves constant use of emotional attacks and humiliation in a rigid, structured day in order to break teens' spirits.

Spring Creek was notorious for a frigid, small isolation room called "the Hobbit"—sometimes teens were left there for months.

From Pathway—which was descended from the infamously abusive Straight Inc.—I received two separate accounts of suicide attempts by girls which were not reported to their parents, and many stories of the usual attack therapy and humiliation. Unfortunately, neither WWASP nor Pathway is completely dead yet: WWASP still has centers operating in the US and abroad, and Pathway has sites in Indiana: Porter and Indianapolis.

The media tends to present these closures as sad examples of needed services being cut—but in fact, teens are better off with no treatment than with treatment that often divides families and has characteristics known to produce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Family support tends to be crucial to long term recovery—and PTSD doubles the odds that a drug problem will become a lasting addiction.

Troubled teen programs were yet another sign of the bubble economy. Many were financed by mortgage and home equity loans because they cost thousands of dollars a month and because insurers, quite correctly, don't usually pay for programs that aren't proven to help.

Since there are proven alternatives for teens with drug and other problems that do not carry the risks of "tough love," we should greet the closings of these centers with glee.

And those who care about this issue should keep the pressure on so that the wounded programs finally die. After all, there are still teens suffering inside, being "treated" without dignity or respect—some of whom were just transferred from closed programs to other similar, sites.

Legislation to ban the most egregious practices is coming—and may well be strengthened now that the Democrats control Congress and the White House. But an even better outcome would be for the "troubled teen" industry to wither and be replaced by what the evidence shows works: community-based, family-centered, minimally restrictive, and youth-driven care.

    We do have one!!!!!!
    Matthew:
5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled
10:21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Of course we have one. What I meant was there are now at least two more available. I was suggesting Landover could expand it's program. The available facilities seem to already have the appropriate torture chambers isolation cells educational facilities in place. It sounds like a low cost way to expand the ministry.

        Excellent idea, Brother Lazarus.

We could use these camps to help prospective ex-gays concentrate
on Jesus, instead of on . . . well, those things they concentrate on.

It would also be a good way to separate the ex-gays from the ex-negros, so that they can study the Gospel in peace.
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

This report concerns me deeply. We Pastors have been lobbying and greasing palms praying hard that the new administration is redirecting some of that juicy, endless faith-based money into such secular activities as purchasing huge watermelon patches in Mexico.

If America is to remain a strong, Christian nation, then we need to expand our "Boot Camps" for troubled youth, not reduce them. I am particularly concerned about teaching healthy, Bible-based discipline to muscular obstinate young men between the ages of 16 and 21. If they don't get the rod hard and often, they'll be lost to a sinful lifestyle that offends Jesus.

Lets all keep praying for Faith-based boot camps for troubled young men to erect themselves all across this great land of ours. Amen!

Have you ever wondered why they say that? I'll give you a clue: it's because you have child abuse problems (well, that's not strictly true. Actually, you're all very proficient in the art of child abuse. Well done you).

Anyway, that's not what's important right now. Nothing a papist has to say is ever important. What's important is that there's going to be even more wonderful sites for teen boot camps coming on the market very shortly, so keep your eyes peeled for a great Christian business opportunity, brothers!
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

Re: Teen Boot Camps close, Landover Opportunity?

Most parents usually begin looking for teen boot camps because of the rigid structure associated with military style boot camps. Other options that are becoming more popular are specialty boarding schools that are geared toward producing long-term results in a teens behavior.

I don't know how they do things in ooga-booga land, but here it is not considered polite to just barge into a conversation that's been over for two years and start babbling unsaved nonsense. Now, do you have anything relevant to tell us about Jesus?

I agree. And many parents resort to teen boot camps to get their teens back on track. These camps use military-style teaching exercises and discipline to teach valuable lessons to underachieving teens while encouraging them to reach their full potential. This page discusses the effectiveness of teen boot camps.

I always say, an honest days work makes a man out of a wimper boy. As always, I'll be extending my True Christian(tm) hand again this year, opening up the Hutchins Plantation to young virle boy and developing girls for a summer full of 'fun on the farm'. Kids will get a realisitic view into the world of modern farming using a time tested hands on approach. Fees will again be modest, $5,000 per child, a $1,000 discount for three or more. Be sure to pack them lunches, work gloves (do not forget name tags!!) and a a KJV Bible.

Here is one of the girls from last summer participating in the Saturday night farmers market.
