Alabama has issued a license plate with the anti-gay phrase 'no homo' to the owner of a black Ford Mustang.
The vanity plate reads 'N0H0M0,' with zeroes instead of letter o's, on a pink background.
Paul Fulton Jr first discovered the plate on Monday (8 December) in his office parking lot in Atlanta.
He told the ThinkProgress website that he was 'first shocked, then angered' that Alabama had issued the plate.
'How could they allow outright discrimination to be published on a state license plate?' he said.
'No homo' is a phrase used to distance the speaker from something they said that could give the impression they were gay, especially in hip hop.
'In a sense, “no homo” is just a more evolved way of calling someone a “faggot,”' music journalist Nick Catucci wrote in New York magazine.
The NBA fined Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert $75,000 for using the 'inappropriate and vulgar' term at a press conference.
Amanda Collier, a spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Revenue, said a three-member panel reviewed all applications for personalized license plates.
'There is a list of more than 6,000 plates that are strictly banned and will not be allowed on any tag in the state,' she said.
