Washington Democrats have reached a new low with this one.

They have found foreign governments and corporations around the world book thousands of rooms at Trump hotels and never use them. Then they go on the make the outrageous claim it is a form of bribery to get favorable attention from the President. To bolster their phony argument they have testimony White House staff suggested they book these rooms.

Hasn't anyone heard the phrase, "plans changed"? They change all the time. Airlines cancel flights so guests do not arrive. People get sick and cancel travel plans. Someone forgets it a birthday and wedding anniversary and does not travel. All of us have had this happen.

Just because some leader is looking for money from the U.S. government and books a hundred rooms at a Trump hotel does not mean the two are related. Trump hotels are the world's best. And, if they are not used because plans changed why do Dems immediately raise their eyebrows? This is outrageous:

Even if they did, I'm sure Trump Hotels Inc. have THE BEST refund policy to match their newspaper service (USA Today only) delivered to door for $7 with no opt-out.

My own small affirmation, due to frequent but irregular travels I maintain premises on several continents. Rooms, maybe a house, an apartment or flat depending on frequency of visits and local expectations in different cities; obviously I'm not going to be in all of them all the time or even very often. Landover is a true blessing which I value above all but let's be honest – for foreigners not knowing the pitfalls of certain locations, what could be simpler than accommodation having known and trustworthy provenance?

Meetings can be conducted with adequate security and if you need to sleep over for a day or two (or months or years) it's all found and no nonsense from quibbling petty authorities. For an individual that would hardly be a concern but for foreign governments and corporations around the world it's an important consideration. Who would want to do business with a flibbertigibbet?

Security is an excellent explanation, Sister Mitza. World leaders often have people shadowing them looking for an assassination opportunity. What better way to ensure security than booking rooms that are not used and confusing those who intend to do harm. Trump Hotels are places a leader would be expected to stay and bad people will be fooled by these reservations.

It's a win for President Trump's company but a win for foreign leaders protecting their safety while also lobbying for U.S. aid.

That reminds me of another consideration for people trusted with tax revenues. Office suites by the hour. Located near airports or intercity rail hubs these facilities come in all sizes, often equipped to a very high standard with slump glass décor and your "company name" done in gold lettering on the walls, all the electronic stuff you can think of (at an appropriate charge of course) so, yes, rather expensive especially if you're only going to be there for a couple of hours or a day or two to fleece some poor sap of his tax moneybags.

A more permanent base for the trusted statesman's own use (on behalf of his nation) eliminates the cost of monitoring these international feather merchants, freeing up resources for other things. Many small nations nevertheless have considerable funds available which an unlisted offshore investment scheme could siphon off pretty quickly. Those office suites can be pretty impressive, intended to deceive even a sober foreign representative.

The prudent assemblyman when visiting the United States understands the advantage of such a facility in a respectable part of town, especially when compared to setting up an additional consulate, enabling cost efficient transactions to be carried on with all the benefits that brings for the folks back home. It's the responsible thing to do.

As ever, Sister Mitza, you have hit the nail on the head. It is really quite inconvenient to maintain rarely-used properties, and if there were only a Trump Towers in Riyadh then my husband's working life would be a lot simpler. As it is, he has to use the Dubai apartment and commute. The very disappointing failure of the people of Azerbaijan to complete the President's Baku project has also meant that he is paying some extortionate property taxes (and eating some very odd food.)

But to get back to the original question, obviously people's plans can change at the last minute, too late for a refund (though I personally think it would be vulgar to ask the President for a refund). I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

What actually happened is foreign governments buy thousands of rooms but staff just are unable to use them.

There are legitimate reasons these rooms are not used. That there are at the same time requests for money from our government that President Trump can provide is just a fluke of events. There is no connection between the paid for but unused Trump Hotel rooms and Trump's frequent grants of money to these countries. Anyone with half a brain knows this.

Though let's just say for the sake of argument, even if there was, should the American people care? CEO's get paid tens of millions of dollars to manage companies and managing America is obviously more important than that.


The President of the US obviously has more impact than their measly 400k a year salary would indicate. If a President working as hard and doing as much good as President Trump decides to enrich himself at a small and negligible cost to our tax payers, would that really be something to get all up and arms about?


Would you rather have a homeless man as CEO for free if he drives the company into bankruptcy (the bad kind, not the smart managed bankruptcy's that Trump does), or a brilliant CEO who makes the company thrive and maybe skims a little bit off the top every now and again?


Why do dems waste their time trying to prove something that not only isn't true, but wouldn't matter all that much even if it were?

What are you supposed to do? Not take bookings at all just in case Mr Zzyzzwyk happens to be a postman (a federal employee) or Sir Humphrey +1 turns out to work in administrative affairs somewhere? Now I have maintained premises in different countries, often rented, usually empty for several months but I do eventually turn up. Open the door. Sizzle up a yummy seafood stir-fry with shallots & chilli, put my feet up after an arduous flight from wherever I was before, make a phone call and before you know it the joint's a-jumpin' like I'd never been away. To use a vernacular expression I heard somewhere. In a song.

Just say the owner, from whom I rented, was president. Am I to be put upon to demonstrate that I am NOT a government agent or work in any capacity for any government? That would have an immediate effect: I'd ditch the place and set up somewhere else. Whether or not I bothered to work anywhere at all. But that has never happened. Usually a year's rent up front is 100% acceptable or even 3 months, they hand over the keys on the spot and disappear. Any other business model would be very ill-advised (from their point of view) and particularly inappropriate for running an entire nation.
