Baghdad, Iraq, 12-24-2007 (API) Here in this war-torn city the spirit of Christmas has come. American troops continue to carry out anti-insurgent operations but now they do it while singing Christmas carols.
"Yeah," sergeant Jack Fletcher said, "usually we sing a few carols to the Iraqi detainees after we get them into the transport. If they're gut-shot or vomiting blood we do something soothing like 'Silent Night' or 'What Child Is This', but if they've only got flesh wounds we'll give them a lively number like 'Jingle Bells' or 'Deck the Halls.'"
When asked if the Muslim Iraqis objected to hearing Christian holy songs, Fletcher said, "Well, if they do then we beat them with rifle butts in between verses. That usually opens them up to the music."
Yes, it sounds like the spirit of Christmas has come to Iraq.
