WASHINGTON — Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.



A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

Ow come on. Do you really think our beloved candidate would fall for this? OK, we can't all be pretty, but this one looks like she was run over by Deaner's truck SEVERAL TIMES. And then woke up from the dead.

I was appalled at Lou Dobb's last nice covering these lies. I mean Lou is always wrong! Sheppard Smith always has the real facts.

I even read today that some pro-life Christians might vote for Obama now.

Don't they know that could be their first class ticket to hell?

Turns out that the Mormon Mitt Romney was behind this smear campaign.

• Evidence: It was republicans from McCain's 2000 campaign who reported this.
• The NYT sat on the story instead of printing it when it was reported - it was actually reported just in time for voting in Iowa.
• Romney never actually conceded - he just "suspended" his campaign. If this story does as much damage as he hoped, he will jump back into the fray.
