If it were only one, but unfortunately having more than one - my wife works in the hospital. I hear the horror stories every day.

Government is compulsion. You don't choose which roads to pay for. You don't choose your own speed limit. There are rules involved, which include paying your taxes.
It also includes helping the poor through either paying them a living wage or through bread and circuses.
Not only is it your civic duty. It is your duty as a Christian. You should smile every time you see your paycheck knowing you are helping your fellow man.

Are you familiar with bread and circuses? If the rich did not organize this for the poor, they knew they could count on losing their heads.

Much like this empire, Rome declined once too much wealth was concentrated in too few hands. The populace no longer felt any desire to fight for the people who controlled Rome. They knew their work only went to enrich the interests of the few.

That plus the plutocrats brought in scads of slave labor leaving the natives to contend with people willing to work for nothing.

The American dream is not a handout. It is to work reasonable hours for reasonable wages that allow a decent living for all.

You really think those are the only verses that deal with the treatment of the poor?
