Tithing: is it a sin to give more than 10%

O mighty fellows of Landover, whose boots I am not worthy to lick,

If I were to consider tithing greater than 10% of my income, would this be considered sinful?

Why would you ask such a question? Is there any scripture that might indicate that God would limit the amount you give?

The fact is, God expects a MINIMUM of 10% of you GROSS INCOME. Many Bible scholars believe that 30% is a more realistic number.

And if you're poor, He expects you to donate everything.

Mark 12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. Mark 12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. Mark 12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: Mark 12:44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

For more on Tithing, take a look at THIS thread.

We're still waiting to hear from you, via that shiny "Donate" button at the bottom of this page.

I think the answer lies in my message below.
DO NOT ask questions! Just tithe. A LOT!

Re: Tithing: is it a sin to give more than 10%

To be honest, I would seriously question the salvation of a man who was only tithing 10%. That's the bare minimum. If someone's only doing the bare minimum that God asks of him, then what does that say about his conviction and enthusiasm?

In 2Cor 9:6-10, God tells us that if you are grudgingly tithing the bare minimum, then don't expect any favors.

If you cheerfully tithe above and beyond what you think you can afford, God will not only take care of you, but He will repay you severalfold.

If you worry about your own needs when figuring up how much you can afford to tithe, then that's just proof that you don't trust God.

        Pastor Billy-Reuben
Upon request I will cite scripture for all these facts in God's Holy Word.

âśť This is a Christian community and we worship GOD of the Holy bible, the only Living GOD. We worship Jesus Christ, Son of GOD and Savior. Anything else is absurd. âśť

That's a very good point, Pastor Billy. How can anyone not be enthusiastic about Jesus?

This is why I was asking, Pastor. From what you have said, it seems that it would be wise for me as an unwashed sinner to tithe substantially more than 10% - after all, if I were to make a mistake and inadvertently tithe only 9.98%, from what you have said there's a risk that God would consider this to be a mockery.

Better, surely, to tithe 20 or 30% and seek joy in the eyes of the Lord than tithe 9.98% and find myself burning in the sulphurous pit below.

You're missing it, Yittrrym. If you truly are a True Christian(tm), you will have an irresistible instinct to tithe. You'll be so happy tithing, rebuking sinners, reading the Bible, and praying that you won't want to do anything else. If you have to make yourself give more than 10%, odds are you aren't saved.

I tithe full in accordance with the Bible, and believe me it is a far different figure from 10% of my income! God doesn't mind!

This is most curious, as I submitted a tithe only an hour ago. Has it yet to appear to in your accounts?
