A bass fiddle is like a very large violin with a deeper tone. It was a key instrument in chamber music groups. It's typically very classical style music(I like it) but I've never seen one played in between the legs. She must have been lazy. Most females that play may sit, but the legs are folded to the side, not spread like this girl has them. But I'm guessing it was a simple mistake, she is a girl after all.

Bass fiddles aren't played in marching band. They're played in orchestra and stuff, but not marching band.

Every time I've ever seen it played while sitting, which is the easiest awy to play it using a bow, and is how it's played in chamber music or symphony settings, it has been placed between the legs. Placing it to one side would cause the musician to have to twist her body in a very uncomfortable manner to bow the strings.

Roberta is correct; the instrument is a Cello (Violincello). It has a range from C(3) to about F#(6). One disturbing note is that the instrument has a "G" string (and we all know what that means). Women should not be playing this instrument as the low frequency vibrations are apt to affect their nether regions. There have been rumors of women being driven to play this instrument in the nude.

Once again, you don't know what you are talking about. That's a picture of a dwarf playing a cello.

Early Cellos were held between the calves until the endpin was invented in the early 1800's. Early female cellists did indeed play the instrument "side-saddle" as it was considered improper for a woman to part her knees in public. Kindly go do some research before posting your drivel here and misleading everyone.
