My current thinking is that these kids will not understand they should contribute and it would take quite a while to explain it all. I'm leaning toward skipping that part of the event.

Does anyone have some advice on this? Thanks.

It happens so often. We here at LBC come up with an idea. Someone else hears about it, shamelessly copies the idea and jumps in front of us. We were the first ones to suggest an inspirational speaker to alleviate poverty.

Now we see Billy Graham's son, Franklin, going to Haiti with a program that copies ours to a "T". He learned from us that what is needed there is not food and shelter but an inspirational message.

He is calling his "Hope". Ironically, that is exactly the label I was planning on using in Africa. Maybe others can help me come up with another. Anyway, if you want to read about the copy-cat Graham, here it is:

Almost a year has passed since the devastating earthquake hit close to Port-au-Prince, Haiti s capital, leaving over a million people homeless It is in this desperate time that a Festival of Hope ...
Isaiah 24:1-3 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty (2)...as the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. (3) The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken his word.

this is the main reason: they are just too lazy to hunt and fry the bird on their own.
