I attended a planning meeting at Freehold High School yesterday. The topic was to decide the stage presentations for next school year. A well-meaning staff member said, "How about The Music Man? It was written by an Iowan from Mason City about Iowa."
I was so angry I had to take a few breaths before I replied. The Music Man is a musical that belittles what we believe in Freehold and Landover Baptist Church. "Don't you realize Wilson made fun of sin in The Music Man?" I asked. "Don't you realize he makes sin something to laugh about?"
When I had settled down a bit I went through the lyrics of one song. It refers to "morals after school" and "the Devil" as if they are a joke. It speaks of moving from small sins to huge sins as if doing that would be hilarious.
The nice staff member apologized, and the meeting went on to consider more wholesome musicals.
