Our space program has been filled with dramatic heroism. Brave men have rode the rockets fearlessly to the moon and back. Think of the intellect of Neil Armstrong who said, "One small step for man, one giant leap for man kind."

All of this this has been thrown in the trash with the news Sally Ride was a homer. Her experience of being the first woman in space should be deleted in the public recond.

In what is perhaps a stellar example of the new trend in coming out quietly, Sally Ride, the first American woman to rocket into outer space, came out as a lesbian in her obituary, a day after her tragic death due to pancreatic cancer. She now makes history not only as the first American woman in space, aboard the space shuttle Challenger, but as the first openly gay or bisexual person (while the obituary referred to a relationship with a woman for 27 years, it's possible, since Ride was once married to man, that she identified as bisexual or without a label) to fly in space as well.

Waiting to "come out" until your obituary isn't "coming out quietly", it's "coming out cowardly"!

How were we True Christians(tm) to know that she needed Landover's Ex-Gay program? We could have helped her give up her carpet-cleaning business and find her way to Jesus' warm embrace!

But now, it's too late. Her cry for help came in an obituary . . . which may well have been a suicide note.

A great insight to the whole mess, Rev. Rodimer. I did not recognize, as you did, her coming out was a cry for help.

Her struggle for sexual identity could have been solved so easily with the help of our talented Landover Baptist staff. Sadly, she is dead and will never know the happiness of being a True Christian™.

I'm surprised the newspaper didn't edit that part out of the obituary.

It's said we should not speak ill of the dead; but what if they choose to speak ill of themselves? Should we not protect their reputations, in spite of their deranged, chemo-drug-ridden wishes?
