Hello people. I'm John. I live in the UK with my girlfriend and two lovely kids. Just wanted your views on the opinions held by some on this forum.
Just to make things clear, I AM NOT here to FLAME or TROLL you and I'm not here to deride or belittle anybody. Each to their own/live and let live etc etc.
I'd just like some fresh opinions on a subject that I was discussing with my sister. OK some context - she is a devout Christian and has been since teenage (now in her 30s). I'm a atheist. We have frank discussions about science v religion, which occasionally might get a little heated, but I respect her views and beliefs and she respects mine. We are each other's flesh and blood after all!
So anyway, the subject in hand....
There seem to be a lot people on this forum who are of the opinion that science, everything that comes from it and everybody who practices it, is in some way evil. As a scientist (actually a chemistry teacher to be precise) it interests me to know why some individuals consider what we do to be 'evil'.
I re-iterate - I'm not here to upset anybody; they're just questions...
So....
1) Is this an opinion held by your church (or indeed other churches in your country) and all it's members or is it the opinion of a few, very extremist individuals?
2) Do those people who express this opinion on this very forum not grasp the crushing irony that science benefits them every time they log-on or attend church? It's only because of science (the study of semiconductors/the production of electricity) that they are able to express their opinions online. It's only because of science that the roof of the church doesn't collapse on their heads (physics/engineering).
It just seems to be a massive contradiction. Also, if God created everything, didn't he create science?
I'm sure questions like this have been posed before but the search engines on these forums tend to bring up 100s of threads and I have have too many papers to mark to spend time searching through them! I'd like to start an honest and open discussion regarding this subject and I'd be interested to hear your opinions. Just don't bother trying too FLAME me because as a chemistry teacher I have access to a lot of flame retardent materials!!
Cheers!
