They've listened to preachers and priests tell them what the Bible says, and never bothered to read it through, because each time they tried to they came across stuff they questioned, and that made them start to doubt the truth of the whole thing, so they stopped and put those voices away in a box in the corner of their minds lest they imperil their Salvation™.
