The first thing you have to do is to understand that you (like everyone else) are a worthless sinner, despicable in God's sight. You have to understand how angry your sin makes God. Sin is the enemy. Your sin is separates you from being closer to God. Every sin you have ever committed is being counted against you. It's all written down in a book. Every time you told a little white lie, every time you ever looked at someone with lust, every time you ever "touched yourself", every time you ever disobeyed your parents, it's all in there. Nothing you can ever do on your own can make up for your sin. You can't do good deeds to make up for your sin. That won't work. All our righteousness is as filthy rags to God.

It's like this. Imagine a married man, having an affair with another woman, coming home at 2 am, stinking of the other woman's perfume, and his shirt stained with the other woman's makeup. His wife is awake and waiting for him to come home with a rolling pin in her hands. Now, imagine the man decides to attempt to make up for it by picking some flowers out of her garden just before he opens the door. Do you think those flowers are going to make up for what he did, and get him out of the well deserved thump on the head from that rolling pin? Well, neither are our "good deeds" going to make up for our sin, and get us out of our well deserved eternity in Hell.

Now there is a way to avoid an spending your eternity in Hell, but you have to be ready to make a change. Are you ready to give up any and all sin from your life, no matter how enjoyable it might seem? Are you ready to live your life for Christ, doing His will rather than your own? It's not "thy will be done" for nothing.
