This is not Biblically correct. The verse before that discusses the raping of a married woman says "26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbor, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her." Well this does talk about a married woman it shows a rape instance where the woman is not acting like a whore. The statement "there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death" verifies this. If a raped woman were to act like a whore, God would have surely found some fault with her. This can be applied to rape instances not concerning married woman as well becaused the construction of the passage implies that (otherwise God would command the death of the woman and rapist for they both were at fault instaed of suggesting marriage), plus it is only logical to extend this statement.

You don't like what the Bible says, so you are trying to invent wiggle-room where none exists.

Of course not -- that's absurd. Once the first guy rapes her, she is betrothed to him, so the rules in Dt 22:23-27 would apply to the rest of the men.

This is one of the problems with only looking at one translation of the Bible. Other versions say "he must marry". I know you only approve of KJV, but I ask out of curiousity if you know what the original hebrew words for the "she shall be his wife" are and what their meanings are. I do not know and am asking to see if you know so you may back up your claim. The fact that other translations imply "he shall propose to her" leads me to believe that is one of the original hebrew meanings. I have not found the words yet or their meanings, but maybe you can and prove me wrong.

So if a man loved a woman and she didn't love him back, he would just have to rape and her and then give her father 50 shekels and she would be his. And if her father was dead...would he just get her scotch-free?

Even in those versions, is says "must marry", not "must offer to marry".

The transliterated Hebrew phrase is "hayah ishshah". "Hayah" means "will be" or "shall become", and "ishshah" means "wife", so she shall be his wife is the correct translation. You can look it up in Strong's Hebrew Concordance. The Strong's number for hayah is 09161 and ishshah is 0802.

I've read several versions, and they all say something like "he must marry her" or "she shall be his wife". None of them imply a mere offer to marry. But according to you, the rapist should be able to make a half-hearted proposal hoping to be turned down, and if he is turned down then he gets off scot-free. Why are you so soft on rapists?

I am not denying that this is a correct translation, I just am saying that other translations can offer a helpful perspective. One must also take into account historical context. He must marry her because it is the only decent thing to do. She does not have to accept it though, but in the times that this passage was written it would have been unthinkable for the woman or her father to reject the offer. The man has ruined the woman's life and she wouldn't have any other marriage options. Marriage meant everything to a woman in that society. Without a husband, the woman would be ostrasized, but aside from the rapist who is commanded to marry her, she wouldn't be able to find a husband for she was no longer a virgin. That is why he must marry her...for her sake. If the marriage is not for the sake of the woman she does not have to go along with it. In today's culture, a woman can still find a good Christian man to marry after she has been raped, so there is no harm in her rejecting the proposal.

In no way do I suggest the rapist should get away with the crime. I was merely asking you what would happen if there was no father to give the monetary of the commandment to? Would he get to marry her AND not have to give 50 shekels? Obviously you must have to infer somethings from the passage for every possible complication is not addressed. I believe one such complication (aside from the absence of a father) is if the marriage would be more harmful to the woman than beneficial. If she has the ability to marry a man that she wouldn't be disgusted to look at every day, than she doesn't have to marry her rapist. The rapist nonetheless must do his part to make that option available to her. I am in no way soft on rapists! I believe one of the specific reasons the death penalty exists is to rid the earth of those disgusting perverts.
