Hello. My forum name is, as you should already know, AlbinoAtomsk. When posting on a topic about a girl not marrying her rapist (isn't rape still a crime?), I was given an infraction worth 40 points. The person who emailed me my notice went on to say,
I decided that was actually a good idea. So, without further ado, a lesson about Albinism.
Albinism is a congenital disorder charactarized by total or partial lack of melanin in the eyes, skin, and/or hair. Melanin is, as you know, what gives you your color. All the color in your skin, hair, and eyes is pretty much due to melanin.
People with albinism are prone to other conditions as a result of their faulty DNA (and I wonder who would be responsible for that? Hmm?). Disorders are mostly made up of various parts of the eye being underdeveloped. As a result, most people with albinism have impaired eyesight, but not completely blind, contrary to what the idiot from my email thought. Corrective lenses or surgery can help, if not outright correct, this problem.
Obviously, a lack of melanin means that, in total albinism, the skin and hair are white, and the color of the eye is either blue, purple, or red, depending on the severity. The skin needs to be treated with care. Exposure to the sun is highly dangerous, so high level SPF sunblocks are needed. Staying in the shade or under a large hat also helps. People with albinism are at a much higher risk of skin cancer that 'normal' people because they don't have melanin to protect them from UV rays (Interesting side note: melanin can and does become carcinogenic after repeated exposure to UV rays. Either way, skin cancer is easy to get).
In partial albinism, only part of the body is affected. Sometimes just the skin, or patches of it. Same with the hair. Sometimes just the eyes and nothing else are effected, and even then, sometimes you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking that they were in fact partial albino. These people should still take care to avoid too much UV exposure.
To debunk some myths, Albinism is NOT linked in any way to inbreding. Albinos are NOT blind. They do NOT have a shorer lifespan, providing they take care of their skin properly. Albinos do NOT attract lightning. And lastly, it is also believed that albinos possess magical powers, and that harvesting their body parts will bring fortune or prosperity to the owner. This however, is NOT true, as albinos do not possess magic.
There you go. Besides looking like Sean Patrick Flannery (the movie Powder, look it up), Albinos can lead a rather normal life.
I hope this lesson has been informative. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Wait a minute...Are you really one of those albino freaks? Why aren't you blind?
Go make a thread of your own in the "introductions" forum and tell us about being a wierd looking cripple.
