Hello everyone. I have come across your site through my various web surfing and I would like to say hello. I am a Korean teenager from New York City.
I have never really been far into religion because my parents didn't get me into it as a child, but I have been curious about it. I've been lurking on the site and have come across some various articles that I read.
I have just a few questions, about the site and this community in general.
In many of the articles of the forums user "Cranky Old Man," he states that the focus of the thread "X reasons God hates _____" that everyone participating, living in, or having to do anything with _____ is a sinner and should embrace God and will burn in hell along with "everything else except for what he enjoys or is a part of," in some cases America or American Football. Now I am sure that you know much more about your religion than I do, but honestly speaking, after reading that, I thought to myself, "are these people joking?" I believe that if there is a higher power, they wouldn't only love what a small group of white, American Football loving people from the United States of America.
I am an Eagle Scout as well, which means I have to follow a 12-point Law, including being Reverent. I have spoken to multiple community religious leaders, and I asked one Reverend in my area the following question. "As you may know, in New York, particularly around here, many small churches have been forming, each preaching the same religion. Every time I walk around, a preacher tells me that I should join their church, and if I politely refuse, they tell me to go to hell. How do you feel about that?" The Reverend replied to that, he loved God and he believes that everyone should try to embrace it, but condemning people to an eternal hell and torture for being different is not the Christian way.
I can already see the response coming from one of your valued community members - "He is not a true leader of religion and will burn in hell for that!"
Also, I was reading the list of your so-called "False Religions and Cults" and I saw Buddhism listed under there. My whole family has been Buddhist, and my ancestors have all been Buddhists. I have been to quite a few services, and I can attest to the fact that they do not "worship: an obese naked Chinaman, and Satan." First of all, Buddhism is a way of life, not a religion, and Buddhists (as far as I know) do not worship anything. Also, many other areas of this site have many offensive and intolerant statements, each arguing that it is not true because of the Bible.
I understand the belief that the Bible is the word of God, and I am sure within 390 years you guys probably have interpreted it better than some others, but using the Bible to defunct any argument seems pretty narrow minded to me. To be honest, you people say that atheists "worship monkeys and the religion of science and evolution." How have science and evolution ever been religions? They are based in fact.
I know that the stories in the Bible are based in fact, of course, "based" does not mean fact. Of course a dead person cannot rise from the grave, of course he cannot turn water into wine. But I think tolerance can be a mixture of both a fanatic belief in religion and the open mindedness to think otherwise.
