I really don't get all this New Testament/Old Testament business. Correct me if I'm wrong but is the New Testament a ploy to make Christianity more acceptable to the masses?

I can see that the Old Testament is very strict. I imaging that Christianity just wasn't selling with all that talk about beating your slaves, keeping woman in the subservient position, killing gays and burning children if they disobey their parents.

Like any other organization did Christianity try to revamp the image and put out a peace, love and tolerance "New Testament" so that Christianity would be easier to swallow?

Simply put, the Old Testament is the law that was given to the Jews. Then they rejected and killed Jesus and the New Testament is basically the way for us gentile to get into heaven.
