      Actually, there are some couples who choose to take the woman's name instead of the man's name.

      For example:
      John Doe and Jane Smith get married, and instead of it becoming John Doe and Jane Doe it becomes John Smith and Jane Smith.

      Or it's possible that the mother never married or the father left the family, in which case some mothers give their children their maiden name instead of the father's last name.
